I am a owner of a 2001 F1 spider with low milage (approx 23000 km) which is equal to 14375 miles.

When I started the car today the bottom display shows a big X, tried to switch off the car and restart but the X was still there. There was also some other symbols on the left screen which was on (fog lights etc). Those was not put on by me and they disappear when I tuch the various buttons. I notice that the Kilometre (miles) counter shows 555555.

I have taken the car for a test run and the kilometre (miles) reading start adding to this high figure :( - now showing 555564

I have manage to reset all the other alarm, X has disappear- Car acting as normal with the kilometre exception.

Prior to start the car was on maintenance charge. I am working "overseas" and have done this before without any problem.

Anyone else experience such a problem ? Any reccomendation?

I live approx 550 miles from the nearest authorized Ferrari workshop....

    Appreciated any feedback.

    Best regards Jostein from Norway.

I have same problem on my 360 since last autumn. You propably had dead battery trying to starting car ? thats my reason. Few guys faced same issue. Ussualy its caused by dead battery / start. Electronic in cluster is very sensitive. Ferrari service has no solution exept to order new cluster (expansive......). You can order new cluster or you can find someone who has experience with speedos and he can fix it - its possible. If you search here you will find some contact in U.S.

I dont care about this now but i know someone in CZ who will fix it for me, just have to find time. BTW you have to remove cluster to fix it. Hope this help, good luck.

There is an independant shop in Costa Mesa, California called F.A.I. Here is their contact information:

    F.A.I.
    935 Sunset Dr # A
    Costa Mesa, CA 92627
    (949) 631-6373

They have alot of experience with electronics - ECUs, dash, etc. and have the ability to diagnose, repair, and reset electronics. I had a problem with a Stradale dash and the dealer told me I had to buy a new one ($6000 installed). The dash was sent to FAI and they repaired it for $650.

    Good luck!

Thanks for info. I live in Norway (Scandinavia). I have to search for similar repair shop closer to my area. Does it have to be a ferrari specialist to fix it ?

    regards Jostein

Remove the instrument cluster and send it to them in LA.

You'll have it back in a few days.

A member from Switzerland did that about 2 months ago.

There are not too many who do this repair work.

You can e-mail Rod at: [email protected]

Point is that propably any speedo-electronic specialist will fix it except Ferrari service ....... BTW you have to put your real mileage back than. this can be done by F service propably (theoretically they can read it from ecu) or the guy if you tell him the number.

Is it very comlicated to remove the cluster?

Will the car show the origianal milage after repair ?

No it is not complicated but if you are not mechanically inclined (which I sense you may not be) you should have a Ferrari mechanic remove it.

Cluster is easy to remove. As for mileage I do not know if it stores the previous correct mileage or not. You may have to provide some recent documentation showing mileage. I'm sure he can put the mileage back to the original number.

As the other person mentioned you should DHL it to California. Probably take two or three days to fix and they can DHL it back to you. Much easier than sending your whole car to a service center.

Your sense is correct, I am not a mechanic. But just wonder if a "normal" mechanic could do since the nearest Ferrari workshop is 550 miles away

Thanks, seems like this is the best way to proceed. I can ask him by email.

This is out of my instruction sheet for Ferrari Dial Replacements:

"Release the steering wheel lever first and extend the steering wheel as far out towards the driver’s position as it will go (away from the dash). Next remove the screws that are located on the bottom of the steering wheel which when removed release the top cover. Please be very careful when removing this piece as it has two long plastic tubes that fit into the top cover from below. It is easily broken. One of the tubes needs to be moved up and around the ignition housing. If you pull too fast the plastic tube will crack. Remove the cover carefully.

There are two (2) 8 mm bolts securing a bar that which must be removed for the steering column to drop further down far enough to enable the cluster to be taken out without contacting the column.

The four 3 mm allen bolts screws which secure the dashboard cluster must be removed to enable its removal. Very carefully slide the cluster out towards you. Unplug the connectors on the back of the unit.
    "

    Hope this helps.
