S2000s are great cars. If you think you might ever start racing I would recommend the Miata because you can prep the car for spec-Miata and race for a reasonable amount per season. For $10K you could probably purchase a really nice spec Miata that would be very competitive and fast.

I owned two S2000's in a row, a 2001 AP1 and a 2005 AP2. Both cars performed daily driver duty, but also saw some decent track time. I think the S2000 is a great platform to develop smooth track driving technique. It is a "momentum" car that rewards precision at the controls. It doesn't take much to make the S2000 fast at the track - alignment (even the OEM suspension allows for good amount of negative camber at both ends), high temp brake fluid, track pads. I would recommend an aftermarket rollbar. I'm 5'10 and the stock hoops don't clear my head.

The S2000's power delivery is such that it feels slow on the street. However, it is immensely satisfying to keep the motor screaming at between 6000-9000rpm on the track using that most "snickety" of shifters. I had a modified Evo 9 that could run with 997 Turbos on the track, but I still enjoyed my the S2000 track experience more. If you're not all about the laptimes, the S2000 is a great track machine. But if you want to play with the big boys, you can easily and affordably transform the S2000 into an absolute track monster. There are multiple forced induction kits, high-end suspension solutions (Motons, Penskes, etc.), downforce generating wings, and weight cutting measures (throw out top mechanism and interior bits to get down to 2500lb).

I just bought a 2001 Honda S2000 to use for track. It is 100% stock, I picked it up for $7,400. I am doing basic maintenance and fluids on it and going to use it stock until winter and then do drastic weight changes and wheels & tires/suspension/brakes. Then down the road supercharger.

    Very excited!
