I'm thrilled that the Bears went after a quarterback that made sense for the first time since WWII. But what's the scoop on him from the perspective of the fans? I'm not as much of a stat guy as I am a heart and gut guy.

Any kid who can make Vandy competitive in every SEC game during his college career has to have talent and heart. Their record may not have been great, but with little other talent, the fact that they were in damn near every game during his career says a lot.

Cutler's greatest fault — like all who have come through Denver in recent years — is that he's not Elway. I don't know the whole story, but the Denver media sure made him out to be a whiny baby. I don't think that's entirely true and if he did have his feelings hurt, it's not unreasonable to see why. A new hotshot head coach comes in and and one of his first orders of business is to to try and acquire his old quarterback in a three-way trade; all of course unbeknownst to Cutler. I personally was looking forward to seeing what could be done with his development under the new coach and I get the sense that Cutler himself was genuinely looking forward to the new era as well so it must've come as a blow. His cold-shoulder reaction was probably not the best approach either. It's a shame that the situation had to deteriorate so badly.

But to answer your question: he's about as close to Elway as we've seen. He has a cannon for an arm and I think that should link up quite well with Hester's speed. He can get out of a tight spot. Sometimes. Other times, perhaps much too often, he chokes and gives the ball up. That could easily be a maturity thing (although a guy like Favre never grew out of it). He's been criticized for not being a great decision maker, but then the entire Broncos organization hasn't been a good decision maker for many years now. I wish him well (as I did Brian Griese, Gus Frerotte, etc.). He definitely could be one of the premiere QBs in the league under proper guidance. Guess we'll wait and see what Orton can do. My guess is he's just a placeholder until McDaniels and Bowlen can get what they're really after: Tom Brady.

Being a long time Bronco fan, I'll have to say Jay Cutler reminded me a lot of John Elway. He seemed to take charge of the offense in a way most young quarterbacks can't. And he seemed to be a guy the veteran players had a lot of respect for. This past year he matured and didn't seem to make as many stupid throws or poor decisions under pressure. I think the Bears actually got the better end of the deal, the Broncos didn't have their running game as in years past and seemed to rely on Cutlers arm to keep them in games. I'm sad to see him go, I hope this young, new coach doesn't totally destroy the team, trying to make it "his" team.
If the Bears ( or should I say Da Bearsh?) have a tall receiver that can reach up and snag the ball, it'll be perfect. Cutler seemed to throw the ball high and let Brandon Marshall go get it and it worked.

I haven't followed him closely, but I keep hearing good things about him, intangible type aspects that go beyond the nuts and bolts. I mean, who didn't know from a mile away that Rick Mirer was a joke? But I'm excited about Cutler.

I'm real bummed he's gone. Cutler the quaterback was awesome--rocket arm, his decisions were getting better and he helped keep our record at 8-8 with horrible defense. Cutler the person is a little different, but I didnt mind as much because he was a good quarterback for my team ( ;) ) His stats are semi-padded though, because we were playing catchup all the freaking time last season, but that doesnt take away from the fact that he is a player.

He tends to be a pouter (sp?) and seems to isolate himself on the sidelines a lot (i.e. may not be the greatest "team guy") Da Bears certainly "won" this trade though, I WISH I was a bears fan right now--and I dont look forward to playing them soon. Josh McDaniels is not off to the greatest start here in Denver IMO, I'll wait until the games start to really form an opinion, but right now I think he's a *****.

Time will tell, but right now I'm not thrilled for '09-'10 season.

Well, you got a couple first round picks (which the Bears are notorious for wasting). Orton may not be Elway, but he's become a pretty solid QB who will probably have a long NFL life, even if he doesn't become a superstar. I can see him having a Jeff George-type career. And Orton is a good guy, too.

Cutler has the potential to be a HOF caliber QB. He needs to cut down on the poor decisions he makes at times and evolve into more of a leader. But this Broncos fan thinks the Bears got the better of this deal, by a longshot. I'm still pissed about how all of this has gone down. McDaniels has burned any goodwill he might have had. He might get booed at the first home game.

None of Shanahan's picks have paned out. He inherited a good team from Dan Reeves that won
2 Super Bowls. Once Mike Shanahan started to draft players, the team tanked.

All Shanahan draft picks. I'm not going to argue that he didn't struggle in the draft earlier in his HC career, but the last few years were very good.

And without TD, they never win a single Super Bowl.

    Ya beat me to it.

But also, he traded Portis for a 'shut down corner' that can't 'shut down' much of anything...

I don't think Cutler was pouting - how would you feel if you were a Manager, and your NEW boss comes in and basically says he has no confidence in you ?

Champ is easily the best player on the Broncos. No corner can shut people down with zero pressure from the front 7.

I still think the Broncos got the better of the Portis/Bailey deal.

I'm pissed about the whole Cutler thing still. What a waste.

Champ Bailey has to be good because the front line sucks. Champ got hurt last
year (hamstring) stopping a run that broke through the line. Shannahan traded
his defense for an offense. Shannahan let John Lynch and and Jason Elam go. Stupid!
