Probably a long shot - but I'm looking for a mid 90's or so Geo Tracker - must be auto, doesn't need to be 4WD.

Any "dealers" around with access to local auctions? Do these things even come up at auctions? Might even consider early 2000's Chevy Tracker instead - depending on pricing.

Daughter wants to spend her own money to buy her first car - she's been saving and has a thing for Tracker's for some reason. :) Can't convince her to go ahead and try the manual tranny.

    Thanks for any help!

Maybe she's been watching HD Theater on cable and caught the show "Wheeler Dealers". They recently had a two-parter where they refurbished a Tracker or Samurai. The show made the ride seem appealing and affordable!

FWIW, A good buddy of mine lived on the island of St. Kitts for 4 years. There are more unpaved then paved roads there and little if any certified mechanics. Anyway, he drove an old Tracker and put a ton of the hardest miles a car has ever seen for those 4 years and the car never gave him a problem.

Your daughter may be on to something!

    Thanks Jeff!

She has been a tracker fan for about a year now - and I have no idea how she got started on that. We see very few around.

That black one looks pretty neat - and she'd probably go for it, but it's definitely out of her price range. The white one is not an auto.

I'm looking to find something about $2K. A little more wouldn't be a big deal. There are a few 93's, 94's with around 120K miles I see going for about that on Ebay - but nothing close, and most of them are up north - and I'm not sure I want to deal with a car that old that has been driven on salty winter roads.

Her price range is why I was asking if anyone had seen these at auctions - that I might be able to find her one "cheap" that way.

That's good to hear - and I've read the same - and that's why I'm not too worried about a high mileage example.

Who's going to pay the repair bills?...because with either of those cars there will be plenty. I've had a couple of friends with them and they were forever being repaired for some reason or another. Buy a Honda CRV or a RAV4 if she wants a small SUV, but a Tracker...no thanks, that was at the prime of GM crap.

The Tracker wasn't really a GM product - made by CAMI a GM Canada/Suzuki joint effort. I imagine there will be some repair bills with any car with 100K+ miles on it, but from what I've read there isn't much of an issue with these early trackers. Small to moderate repairs I can do myself. Your experience seems to be the exception - unless I'm missing something.

Either way, most of her attraction to the Tracker is the removable top - can't do that with a CRV or a RAV4 - plus, I'm pretty sure those are out of her price range.

Is that a snorkel on the black one? Perfect for those times when the river rises.

+1. The tracker is a really sturdy old style body on frame SUV. It is extremely simple. ANYONE can work on it and parts are VERY cheap--which is why they exist at all on a tiny remote island like St. Kitts. This was not a GM product. In fact, it probably is more Suzuki. My friends car was absolutely bullet proof, was never cleaned, had no top, and sat exposed to the monsoons of St. Kitts, all year long in addition to the mud, salt and unending pounding of dirt roads that bore a better resemblance to a wall than an actual road. 4 years, a ton of miles, no services, and no repairs. For the money, they are really good cars.
