Have a friend who offered me a 944 for damn near nothing, but I wanted to know if anybody on this forum knows about the spec racing series for the 944 in the scca events. Im not that familiar with the spec class and Im trying to weigh out putting some time into a build or just passing up on the car. If all else I am thinking of putting an ls1 kit in the old 944 and making it a track only car for just having a good time. Havent picked the porsche up yet but I wanted to know. I just can't hardly pass this one up.

I don't think there is much of a 944 spec series in this area but I bet the car would class very well into the NASA GTS-2 class. NASA has 6 weekends a year within a 5 hour tow of DFW.

Don Istook used to race prep & run the series many years ago but told me the 944 wasn't as fun to race as a 911. I'm sure there is much more to it than that. You might want to give him a call, his shop is in Fort Worth not far from downtown.

Randell, the parts manager at PPP in Dallas, races several ( personally ) as well as works with a few clients cars ( several are here in different stages of build now ) that you could come down and see/touch/feel.

I know that he would be more than happy to talk to you in person about your options, spec's, classes, expense, etc

Drop me a PM and I would be more than happy to make the introduction

well I picked up the 944 and I have decided that the engine sucks!! and it is in definite need of a little american horsepower. So it will be getting a nice new conversion with a 43K mile LS 1 engine out of a vette. HP increase should get me close to 350-400hp! Which is more appropriate. Just wandering with an upgraded 944 v8. Do any of you have ideas as to what race class this car could possibly run in? I know its not going to qualify for spec series racing but their has to be something that this abomination falls under. Any of you doubters about this decision, just youtube search 944 LS1 conversion, and you will see what I mean.

Probably NO race classes for such a bastard car... I would say stick with it stock and race it in the PCA Spec 944 class. There will be a TON of drivers and the competition will be furious and very evenly matched. Not to mention the extra weight should really make the balance suck on what is as stock one of the best handling cars of all time and in its day may have actually been the best.

Good luck whatever you do... I just hate to see a decent car (especially one that has its own race series class) ruined like that but that is just me... If you want the HP and handling (sort of anyway) why not just go buy a C4 or better yet an early C5 Vette and sell the 944 to someone who actually wants to race 944 Spec???

Not true, Rob will know for sure, but not sure if the NASA GTS series requires you to have the original engine or even make. The GTS and ST class philosophy is all around weight and HP, so much more flexibility and fairness which I love. Rob can say whether you need a Porsche engine though, Rob himself upgraded to a newer higher HP engine, but it did remain Porsche. Wait a second, I remember a year ago a guy was in GTS that put an American V8 in a rear engine Porsche.
