WOWZERS! I make a post here, go out to dinner and come back to a gazzillion replies! The young kid made an earnest post, maybe not using the best vernacular, but it WAS honest and took some guts! As far as going to his parents, I had the same parents, so I can relate to that. It's easy to quarterback it, but unless you are in his shoes, it may be best to take his word for it. If you want to help out, then do so. If not, don't!

I've been so poor that I was literally rummaging around the seat cusions at my parents house to find a couple bucks to put gas in my car to get home. I once went to a trade show in NYC when I just started my business, and I didn't have enough $$ for food or to pay for gas to drive home. Luckily a guy bought something 5 minutes before the show closed and I had enough $$$ for a McDonalds burger and to get home. True stories. So, I know a little about coming up with $$ when necessary. But first, Yin is right on the money - you think the $$$ will help you but it probably won't help like you think it will.... althuogh I am sure it will be hard to realize that at this point. But how about this... first, you don't "talk" to that girl about the $$ for the damage, you TELL her how it's gonna be. Keep your pimp hand strong... you tell her you fully intend to pay, and you will do a payment plan. If she says no, you tell her "you can't get blood from a stone", tell her you don't have the $$$, and if she won't accept your offer then there is nothing else you can do. You can tell her that if she wants to sue you, she can go ahead and do that but you'd rather be friendly about it. That's the first thing. Now, you need some $$$... I agree with the other suggestions, sell some stuff. You have an iPod? Laptop? Watch? Digital camera? Look around, what do you have of value? Sell it and get the $$$... you can buy it again later when you have $$$. Also, go to Craigslist and find some odd jobs. In my area, there are people who are doing yardwork this weekend and are paying $12/hr cash... if you were in Boston, you could get a couple hundred bucks this weeekend. In Phoenix there is this http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/lab/1122606315.html Today and tomorrow they are recruiting people to help digging holes. There is always odd jobs around that need done.... you could go around the neighborhood washing windows for $20 a house. Just knock on doors and tell them you're a student earning some extra money and you'll wash their windows for $20 and I guarantee you'll get takers. Or wash cars for $20. Hell, a lot of people will like the 'tude and just toss your some $$$ to do the job even if they don't necessarily need it done.
