Depends on what you are going to use it for. A good starting point would be the Sig Sauer P229. Has everything you are looking for, IMO.

Sig Sauer and HK are great guns but on the expensive side. I own both in different calibers (Sig Saur .357 Magnum, HK .45 ACP).

I also own a Glock compact .45 and a Ruger .40 S&W. The Glock has the stopping power while the Ruger has a bit less kick and my wife can handle it.

The Ruger is an inexpensive gun and would suit you quite well.

The only reason I could see buying a .40 over a .45 or a .357 would be more rounds in a clip or for someone who needs a bit less of a kick.

My favorite gun is my HK P2000SK .357 Sig. You just can't go wrong with that gun.

I have a Springfield XD and Glock 30, both in .40. both great guns but if I had to choose, I'd take the XD.

as an above post mentioned, the Sig Sauer P229 is a phenomenal gun but almost 2x the cost of the XD or Glock.

Money no object? Well that's easy. Heckler und Koch!! Sig Sauer is a close runner up. Or you can just take a huge gulp of the Jim Jones Flavoraid and get a Glock. :D:D

Dont forget about the Taurus PT24/7 which was handgun of the year in '07 and you can save yourself alot of money instead of falling for all the hype. I sold guns at one time and what is most important to me and to the dozens of customers I sold one to was how it felt in your hand. Check them all out and then make the right decision not the 'money is no object' theory.

Do what I did and buy the Springfield XD .45 compact. Compact 45 ACP that holds 14 rounds in the extended mag or 10 in the standard (compact) magazine.

BTW: for the original poster...look at the XD service in 40 or if you are not looking to conceal it look at the XD-M in 40 S&W I love the product, but have shot the Glock 22, 23 and 27 and the are suitable also. Couldn't do the Glock as I had a hard time adjusting to the grip angle.

OK. Sig Sauer or Glock. I already have a Glock 21, so I think I'll aim for a Sig. For those of you that know, should I get the Elite Model or the standard?

I checked the Sig website out. The one on the left looks like the SAS Gen 2 and on the right it looks like the standard P229. I am familar with the standard P229, I like it. I prefer a 9mm or a .45 over the .40 personally but if I had to have a .40 it would be the standard P229.

I figured a few would chime in about the Glock, they are tried and true but just don't fit my hand the way I like.

to the original poster: Have you ever shot a .40 S&W handgun? I was hell bent on a 40 until I shot it against the .45. I liked the recoil a LOT better on the 45 even though the recoil is a bit heavier. The 40 seemed...I don't know...too snappy

The 'best' handgun for you is one that reliably puts a hole where you want it to put a hole. Go out and hold a bunch and see which ones feel best in your hand. Then find a range that rents guns and shoot the ones you like.

I have a Springfield XDm in 9mm and I love it. And how can you not love a 19 round magazine? :D

I'd put that on the list, as well as Sig, Glock, H&K, Taurus, S&W, etc. Find which one fits you the best and go with it.

    Well said.

We went with a Glock (model 22 in .40 cal) because it fit well, and let us cut holes in paper like a rock star right out of the box.
