    F106 is a frame designation....for the 308 series.

My VINs all start F106 (AB*22127*) for example, my yellow car. (1977 North American 308GTB)

It looks like an inspection tag. 56 is the inspector's number.

Very mysterious. Could this mean it is only on the U.S. cars?

Sounds like we're narrowing it down. What about 500/56??

It's not a paint code label. Found it w/my records that were handed down.

Inspection tag....hmmmm. That could be it....

Well, we discovered this... U.S. 1977 308's start with the VIN F106.

We can assume the permanently inked numbers are finite (F106) and (500).

We might assume this tag goes on the 56th of 500 total.

Let's backtrack... how did you obtain this tag?

    + 1

& 500 looks to be a status eg inspector 56 has signed off this 308 as ready to ship

I've seen a similar label stuck to a tool kit but saying 'TESTA ROSSA' and 500 in a box but without the 'inspector' mark

It'd be interesting to know where on the car the label was placed.

It could also be a measurement of something basic, helping with fitment of later parts/panels?
