Went to H&H auctions at Buxton yesterday and this was in the main hall and up for Auction,
(alas i didn't get to see what it sold for as i had gone to get a bite to eat in misery after missing out on the car i did go to look at!!)

However it didn't seem to fool too many people, apart from the kids, who's parents soon corrected them!

And before anyone says anything, no the rake of the windscreen didn't look right, and the height was all wrong!, however it was nicely finished off and looked to have been put together properly!

(I took the picture on my phone, discreetly, so as not to look too much of a cock!

Why would you look like a cock? Isn't photography permitted at these exhibitions?

It's not just the "rake of the windscreen" either. Even from a marginal photo, the poor proportions are really noticeable.

What was it, really? A Datsun?

It wasn't an Exhibition it was an Auction,
and, well standing looking at a car that pretends to be one thing and is in fact another is one thing, standing taking photographs is another thing altogether, especially as the auctioneer was in full flow at the time, and call me old fashioned, or it could be just the 'stiff upper lip', but such shows of over exuberance are not the done thing... (we don't strut and go 'woop woop' at such gatherings, Sir)

Not only were the lines all over the place, but it didn't have a boot lid, the door handles were incorrect, however it had a GTO numberplate and the Datsun Badges were missing!

One of these fine days a proper original 240Z will be a valuable car....

The statement above denotes a complete ignorance of what an original contains. It hasn't been done and cannot be done for obvious engineering reasons. Hub carriers, for instance, f/r are completely different hence original brakes cannot be fitted, original variable ratio steering cannot be fitted, original quickrack cannot be fitted, original geometry cannot be achieved, etc.

Your comments on the Dino engine are also incorrect. A properly made Dino Gr.4 engine can be made as powerful as any 308. Ask Michelotto what he was able to obtain out of the 308, not much due to limitations in the engine design (heads essentially).

As others have pointed out the chassis itself is completely different, your gearbox rations will be different, final ratio will be different, diff locking ratio will be different, etc.

The same goes for instruments, ignition, etc. The Hawk fitted with any engine is not and cannot be made within 90% of the original no matter what you do.

I guess that really depends on how many original Stratos parts I have purchased.

Not so, attachment on the Hawk chassis is different. Even if you have original parts you will not be able to use them, for instance the rear suspension upper attachment on the chassis is different and will not allow you to mount the rear hub carriers, Stradale or Group 4, unless you completely rebuild it.
    What about the steering rack?
Will you build gearbox internals to fit the 308 box with the proper ratios? Will you use the Michelotto cascade gears? Even if you do the ratios are different.

A Stratos is a Stratos if it has a Stratos chassis, a Dino engine and Stratos running gear. Your project could be called Ferrahawk or something but don't expect it to handle, sound, feel or go like a Stratos.

There are original bare chassis for sale, you could you you parts to rebuild them or have professionals do it for you.

I understand what you are saying but go easy on Speedmade, he is not destroying a historic Ferrari or Lancia to make his car. He's just having conscience free fun, and his car will be as close as he can get to the real thing.

I think we should channel the issues with replicas to the car destroyers, not all kit car makers/assemblers.

    Hi Ian

Would that be the ex Scheldt & Pettit car I sold from UK to Gerry Duyvestan? If so I'd love to see some photos of it when it was done.

    Thanks

I contacted the dealer and asked, politely, if the "Make" box shouldn't be designated, "Datsun 240" instead of "Ferrari." His e-mail response was very rude.

I think that this car MIGHT be worth $60k, for a very dedicated Tom Cruise fan. Listing it as a 1962 Ferrari is plain wrong. And that's a LOT of dough for a mere Datsun 240!

How 'bout if we ALL send him an e-mail? ;)

I'm surprised to see no comments yet on the 250TR style car built on 330 running gear that's in the FerrariAds section of this site. It looks fun, but of course it's a 'special' & nowhere near a faithful copy of a real one.

I fully agree. I am building a 250 California kit car from "Classic cars by Renucci" It will have some period Ferrar parts such as seats from a 250 GTE and real Ferrari yellow paint but there will be no question when looking at it that it is clearly posing as a repro. If you go back several years you will see my posts advocating the formulation of a Ferrari replica club which amongst other things would help police such people as the dealer you describe.I never got any interest from these efforts but once in a while I get back in the fight. just one man's opinion tongascrew

This link posted by Tenney in the Classiche video thread (will jalopyjournal become the house magazine of Classiche?) shows a funky hotrod Zagato style 250GT engined car.
As it seems to be space frame/semi monocoque rather than based on a poor old GTE it shouldn't cause too many apoplexies amongst a certain group of FChatters.

Mostly quite nice looking, with a very pronounced 'double bubble'. The grille opening is too round though, reminds me of the egg. Would look a lot better a lot flatter and wider.
Someone is getting a nice new toy!

Are the door-windows from a Lotus Elan?

I'm enclosing some pictures taken in Francorchamps this summer.

Impressive, but an Alfa Romeo v6 engine (or plenty of others) would have pushed it along just as well ... but atleast no chassis as you say has been ruined.

Post #8 (same thread) really sums it up ;)

Really though, the recreation in your linked thread, and the one above are quite impressive; I'd be proud to own either.
