Bradley - there are at least a dozen threads on this film here, some go into great detail about the real story. BTW, for people who like this, the Getaway in Stockholm series is 20x more exciting. Really.
Ahh Jeff, I got excited there for a moment thinking you set up cameras at the Paris Resort Casino there on the Strip and filmed Bob driving his Ferrari through the lobby at 140mph!! LOL LOL Alas... it was not to be Repost or not.. Fake Ferrari ... who cares... the guy gets the lady in the end and that's all that counts!!
I have an original copy,I owned a few euro 6.9 merc and did El Paso to Austin in 7hrs in Steve Gurasiches 6.9euro of GSD&M. I always thought the sound track was a 246 Dino, not a 275,I was not impressed with the jump out of the cornors in the film which led me to think it was a Dino, the mercs ran xwx and had no grip but tons of jump,so,yeah, makes sense, cool post, grazie.
I've driven in Paris a lot and much in the 1970's but have never seen it so deserted. I would like to know the month day tod...probably Nov Sunday 5am.. I did notice stopped or nearly stopped cars close to red lights which I assume either had cross streets blocked or provided warnings. I'm tempted to map the route but wonder if someone already has. ??
Google shows 529 miles between El Paso & Austin...seven hours ain't all that fast; I-10 most of the way, back roads at the end, or I-10 all the way to San Antone, then up to Austin(~600 miles this route). Hell, way out in West Texas, you ain't cranked up till you're goin' at least 90...
THey should have used the Star Wars "Storm Trooper Falling Off Bridge" scream (as seen in every Pixar movie BTW).
paris is oddly beautiful, yet dirty and disgusting, yet well dressed and with good posture (the women, impressively), yet plain and a wildly wildy far cry from any old midwestern blonde scandanavian girl (the women, by far for all their dress and posture and poise, are not actually beautiful, they are quite plain, which ultimately dissapoints an american boy on a visit). So it is, onward and sideways I always say. Get long the market boys, especially if it dips next week.
Nembo - he's going 'fast' considering the traffic density, but he's not really driving that fast overall. Do realize this is reality, not some kids video game: there are women, children dogs and cyclists around.
Cétait un Rendezvous In 1976, a film emerged that, in the words of Jeremy Clarkson, makes Bullitt look like a cartoon.. Titled, Cétait un Rendezvous, it's a real life, highly illegal break-neck drive across Paris and was subsequently banned by French authorities. A cult classic amongst film and motoring enthusiasts, pirate VHS copies traded hands at $50 each until its' recent re-mastering and re-release on DVD. For years, debate and mystery surrounded the identity of the driver, the car and whether anyone would be insane enough to attempt beating it - until now... Rendezvous director and self-confessed driver in the film, Claude Lelouch, was recently spotted at ClubGTs supercar hangar in St Johns Wood - clutching a London street map with marked-out route across the capital. The sighting has fueled speculation for a London-based sequel. Check out www.spiritlevelfilm.com/rendezvous
I'd be amazed if he was able to pull off anything close to the original 35+ years ago. Times have changed so much with traffic densities, even at dawn on a Sunday morning, plus red light cameras, police enforcement and just public attitudes towards this type of driving that doing this without interference might be extremely difficult, if not impossible. Now maybe if there was a support team, dressed in uniforms of road workers or something (NOT Police, impersonating police officers would really get them in trouble!) to position themselves at key dangerous high traffic intersections to jump out and block traffic just as the car is coming through...........
Though not a 365 GT/4 2+2, this movie was made when these cars were in their prime and has the right soundtrack! A 9 minute tour of 1970's Paris. http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/entertainment/watch/v596454yX8nSphf# And for those that have seen it before, its worth seeing again! Regards, Art S.
G,day sorry to spoil this for you but quite a lot of discusion on this film was had on Aussie Fchat about a month ago.If you analyse this virtually piece by piece there are too many discrepancies:The speed does,nt match the sound, the gear changing is all wrong, you don,t actually see the car in question. The fact is that it was an overdup and film on a Mercedes of some sort.Their are people in Fchat land that will confirm this. Simon.
Simon, I know all about the movie. I just think its great fun and a wonderful mood piece from when these cars were new. Regards, Art S.
I've known too that the film is , well... it's a film/fantasy. It's not a documentary piece. And it's fun to watch; a timeless classic. So simple but well-done.
Any good movie encourages the willing suspension of disbelief in the improbable in order to be enjoyable and this one does that extremely well!
Shot with a French Eclair 16mm "MOS"(without sound)..then dubbed..since the GTB has only two seats..no sound guy..now..just relax and enjoy a thirty-year-old classic that was shot soley for entertainment and to relieve you from the stress of daily life..I'll be in Paris in two weeks and a friend of mine and I are going to drive that route(not at that speed)..he's a native so it should be fun. In the mean- while sit back and enjoy the ride.
Hi, I live in Paris, maybe you could pm me. The car was the director's personal Mercedes Benz 300 sel 6.3, the top of the range sedan at this time. Olivier
i still love this movie. i dont care what car it was, i dont care if its sped up a bit, i dont care if the sounds are from the "Le Mans" or "Grand Prix" movies. i do care that its fun to mindlessly watch it for what it is : entertainment for gearheads!
