    Hey anth,

I don't quite understood the thinking of a salesperson (in California) who says "it only takes $800.00 to make it smog legal." - - or, for instance - - "it only has a few rock chips that would cost next to nothing to fix" !!!!!!

And I say - - "well, fix it - and then you don't have to make excuses for the car!!"

Look hard and deep, my friend.

    Good luck,

    Hank

I'm pretty new to Mondials, but that looks like a 2 valve engine. That would make it 1982 at best.

I do believe, the first QV, (late 1982) mondials also had this style plenum, ask if it is the Mondial 8 or is indeed the QV

Fantastic color for the black bumper car. It's not an '85, however. (It's a Mondial 8, not a QV.)

It has a Mondial 8 rear badge. The seller list the car as 1985. The radio position indicates its a Mondial 8.
    Good luck

    Thanks for the info everybody!!
I emailed seller question concerning 1985 vs. 1982, and I see it has been relisted.
I sent them other questions concerning "$800 to pass smog test"
Got a reply stating the car has no "smog pump".

Thinking of finding someone out west to look at car.

    Thanks again,
    Anthony

My QV (82) shares the same chamber as an 8 however as has been pointed out this is an 8, no QV label on the glove box and the centre consol is definitely 8. Same interior as mine except I have black carpets.

You need to drive these early Mondials before you buy one.

The huge front tires make the steering feel like you're driving a truck.

    Later Mondials had narrower tires.

I think you'll find its the TRX's that make it truck like. Change to modern rubber (you have to change the wheels too) and hte car is transformed.

AND DON'T DO WHAT I DID and get ultra sticky wide tires. (I used the same tires as on the shorter 348). My car probably pulls almost 1G on the skidpad now ;) but I couldn't break my rear end loose if I filled my trunk with lead.

    +1

These cars respond magically to smaller section, higher technology tires. My favorite: Michelin Pilot Sport 2 with sections 205/225

Not a good year for Mondials. Mechanicals are the same as the 308's, so I wouldn't be as concerned about that. It the electrics that are the problem. If you ever read anything bad about Mondials, it is usually the Mondial 8 being referenced. Not that they're all bad, but they had a reputation for being very unreliable. I am sure much of this overblown, but I would be very scared to get a Mondial 8 that has not been properly sorted.

A Mondial 8 is a good Grand Touring car, is fun to drive, but is not neck snapping fast. You will need to keep it spinning in the 4000+ rpm register.
As far as what I would recommend for a Mondial 8, immediately after purchase:

    1. Replace fusebox with upgraded version from GT in Phoenix. Immediately. This will fix most of the Mondial's electrical gremlins.
    2. Replace the metric road wheels/TRX tires with the Superformance 7x16" Mondial replica wheels, shod with 225/55-16 Pilot Sport 2 or Goodyear F1 tires. Magically transforms the car.

Exhaust upgrade of choice within the first year. I would recommend Ansa Sport.

    That's all.
