Yes calm down I was outside enjoying my boxer and my family in the sunshine rather than sitting here on the computer! We only get 3 days of summer here it seems so I take full advantage of it. I returned the ONE pm you sent me.

    Kerry,
Paul doesn't have a web site selling these so I don't think he's trying to ditch you. I waited to see if I could buy one and someone cancelled and that allow me to step in. I think Paul is doing us all a big favor and I appreciate it. I own a machine shop and I certainly wouldn't do it. Just not enough profit.

Kerry, you sent me a PM today - ONE PM, first time you have sent me anything and you accuse me of not responding for weeks? Maybe you and your two other personalities should talk to one another before flying off the handle for no reason. How about I dont sell you anything, I think thats the best and safest decision I can make.

I feel your pain. We have a couple of kids and yet we own nothing but 2 seaters. We had to buy a Nissan Versa so that we could drive the family around.

    Hey Newman:

Congrats on kid #3. We've got our third coming in September. My Dino and your Boxer are probably starting to wonder what they ever did to deserve this kind of treatment.

It looks like my 365BB purchase is on hold for another decade or so.

    Best of luck.

Thanks guys, its number 3 but there will be a number 4 in another year or so! I drove by a 66 cady today that was for sale and thought how great that would be to fit all the kids and the stuff in the trunk for summer visits to the cottage. Hmmmm ill have to think about that.

Here are some pics I was sent of a very recent TR diff failure, an 89 to be exact. Note the $4K side cover that got taken out as an added bonus. Not sure about the crown and pinion taking a beating though, it could be worse but its bad enough!

So Brian, are you using the other carrier for a pre-emptive installation into your own TR?

I would love to do the same to mine but I would have to hire it out, I don't have the skills or tools myself.

How many hours (ballpark) does this take NOT including labor for the engine R & R?

    Thanks.

I wanted to make sure I did all the 'light reading' via the other threads noted at the beginning of this thread so I have some perspective on the situation. After reviewing, I have to ask if this is the TR equivalent to the 355 headers, valve guides, etc issue? How often does this take place or is it not all that common of an issue? It sounds like a very reasonable upgrade for a known ticking time bomb in the car, but is there any method to this madness in these things?

I had to reread the post a few times so I could swallow that Ferrari actually welded these rather than machine it properly.

LOL sorry, have some scotch tonight and you'll sleep like a baby :)

After going through the process of making these I can say they welded on the end cap to make manufacturing easier. It was a pain (for the machine shop) to make them as a solid closed end unit. Very labour intensive/time consuming but worth it in the end. The difficulty lies in the machining of the slots inside the unit for the posi clutches and gears. Using a broach requires the carrier to be open at both ends or massive holes have to be cut though the end cap to allow room for the broach. Having a blind hole for lack of a better explanation prevents use of a broach so more expensive technology is required.

Is there a specific mileage one might be able to expect these things to go out or is it all based on how the car is driven (which would make sense) ?

Having replaced one in a Boxer, I would say it has to do with how well the individual unit was fabricated/welded.

So, IMO, not a direct correlation to mileage or how the car was driven.

It should be a consideration on the next engine out service as it does not take a lot of time to seperate the transmission from the engine once it is on the bench. I would not pull the engine/transmission just to replace the differential unit however.

Ive seen a wide range in the quality and size of the welds from carrier to carrier, very inconsistant and of course the metal next to the weld will become crystalized from the welding process.
