I don't name my cars but I had a girlfriend who was obsessed with the idea. She had to name every car everyone owned. She named my Dino gt "Fellini" and my red on red 308 gts "Rossisima" (which I thought was rather clever). I never called them that out of her presence. To me, it was a bit silly. But, she liked it and that was OK in my book.

By the way, I had a friend who had a completely whited out 280Z (bumpers, door handles -- even the windshield wipers). She called that car "Casper" as in "the friendly ghost". I thought that was very clever.

Christine was my 1968 Impala convertible.
The brown bomber aka the incredible sh!+ mobile was my 1974 firebird.
My 1973 Citroen SM was known as Monsieur Citroen; although my father thought she was Christine because the windows wouldn't go down and the air wouldn't work whenever he drove it.
1979 Camaro known as the Great White Hope because most people who looked at it never thought it would make it.
Guiseppe Fiat was a wonderful 1974 Fiat 124.
Alfredo Fiat was a 1980 124 that much like the brother in the Godfather broke my heart.
My wife's first car which survived until we got engaged was a metallic gray/green Buick Skylark known as the gray weasel.
I hope all of my former cars (named and un-named) are being enjoyed by someone other than rust-mites.

Currently only my 1971 Mustang is named. "Peggy" belonged to my grandmother. My grandfather had given her a Custom 500 when she wanted a Cadillac. I always smile when I think of her returning the Custom 500 and coming home with the Mustang and saying, "Guess what I just got...." At 5 ft. 4 in. she was the little old lady from Upland, Ca.

Well, the Ferrari Art Car Amanda named "the Handyman" (after the handprints, and I suppose the cute way she'd bring toys to ME and ask "Can we fix this, with duct tape?" when very young)...

Then later she inadvertantly christened it when discussing disposition of my Estate:

"If it's all the same Dad, I'd like the Trans Am, those Ferraris are a Money Pit!"

Now that she's driving even the Trans Am is too impractical and flashy, it looks like I'll be getting a white Saturn Vue soon, as "a girl has to move a lot of stuff to go to College, Dad".........

My brothers and I had names for each other's cars but usually it was some kind of put-down. Problem was the names stuck and everyone, family and friends, referred to the cars by those names.

1976 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser (last of the big boats) - The Deer Slayer. We killed 3 deer with that thing and kept it till I wrapped it around a tree when I was 17. We couldn't drive that car to church because the insurance agent went to the same church and we didn't want him to see all the damage. (with 4 boys under age 25, car insurance was always expensive).

1977 Cadillac Seville - The Possssmobile. That thing was the biggest piece of S*#t as there ever was. Always needed to be fixed.

1977 Chevy Caprice Classic Coupe - The Beiruit-mobile. Got sidewiped down the drivers side and pushed into a lightpost and raked down the passengers side. Looked like crap but drove fine. Looked like it had been driven through downtown Beruit. Took the insurance money and bought an RX-7 but kept the Beruitmobile for 4 more years. My brother got an internship in DC with an Indiana Senator (with a name that sounds like a gun) and lived at their house in the summers (his boys and us were all in the same fraternity). One day the senator's Lincoln was in the shop and he had to have my brother drive him to work. Made him stop a block before the Senate Building to get out so no one would see him pull into the Senate Garage. Told him to park it on the lowest level in the corner so fewer people would see it.

1987 Ford Custom Van, Burgandy in color - The Purple Passion Pit. Had the sofa in the back that folded down into a bed. More purple crushed velvet than any vehicle should ever have. God I miss that van....Gave a new meaning to the term 'Road Trip'.

1977 Jaguar XJS V12 - Hubris. My older brother was in law school at the time and had to drive a 1974 Honda Civic 1600, affectionately called The Can of Pork and Beans. He thought I was full of myself since I had a nicer car than he did.

Face it, we all call our cars something else than the original name at some point in our lives. Whether by desperation or humor, it's the names that often give us the memories. It is often the story behind the names that are the funniest.

You know? i never thought about that---

Hi Alan:D i was hoping you would pitch in!

Charlie Charlie Charlie! You had me in tears laughing! Reading about the Beirut mobile reminded me of when i was in LA with O'Rielly Bus! Originally he was that baby-sh*t green and white....and when we were behind a pickup load of kids in traffic- i could read their lips "F*cking Ugly Van" and then some would sticking their finger down their throat- it happened more than once!
One evening i dressed to the 9's, drove to Rodeo Drive for a Peter Max opening. I pulled up to the Valet- he gave me an incredulous look and POINTED to where he wanted ME to park it! Frikken hilarious:D

what year model is your"other woman"?

My kids have a bad habit of naming the cars at the house, and are fairly unoriginal:

red Escape - kids call it Strawberry
plum LeSabre- kids call it Grape, but I call it The Old Lady Car. My GF calls it The Cruiser
white Accord- Foofy. I don't know how it gots its name; I blame the kids' mother. Either way, the name is stuck.
buttercup yellow with pink pinstripes Comanche- no nickname by the kids. I call it The Beater or The S***box due to its ruined paint, nonfunctional accessories, bent up back bumper, and huge dent in drivers side.

Actually it is because I baby the Corvette and drive the Miata really hard. Someone once commented on how the Corvette is like my wife and the Miata a hooker. The Vivian name evolved from that. I don't have any motor mods on mine. All suspension, chassis stiffing, racing seats, harnesses..... I used the Miata as my daily driver and I put a lot of miles on it, so I don't want to do anything to mess with the reliability. I have been commuting over a long mountain road a few days a week for a couple years, so I built the car to be able to rocket through that comfortably and safely. I have 186k on her.

I myself have never named one well, but the kids have done keepers. Had an old work-truck,a 92 Nissan xtra-cab, with a camper top that came in handy corralling the dogs and the top had 'Leonard' stenciled in big white letters across the back lid since that was its brand. This truck went to college with one of the boys for awhile and it came home named 'Lynard' pronounced only as well as one of the good ole boys from eastern NC or perhaps southern GA or east TX can as in like LynardSkynard...the accent is hard on the 'Lynn' part, very much thru the nose and nasal. This good old truck is now long gone but fondly and well remembered...the only pic I can find of it is here to attest to its primary ultimate averageness. Anyway, when the Titanium360 came, one of the guys brightly connected the similar color schemes of the two vehicles,I suppose, and announced the 360 as ''Leonardo'' which has for better than worse, stuck. There was this famous Italian so called...so.
    as always,cheers
