What do you think of a window unit not in window but mounted in frame in wall to supplement central AC? I want it extra cool w/ backup for central AC failure on my 25 yo system. Must be fairly quiet so I can watch my 60" Sony in peace. What I’m looking at:

LG Electronics 24,500 BTU Window Air Conditioner with Remote
    Model LWHD2500ER
    $499.00

I'd offer an opinion, but I only have experience with a similar set up, but with a 59-inch Sony.

Depends on how red neck ghetto you want your house to look.

If it is professionally installed and hidden on the outside behind a tall bush, it should be fine.

If you try to do it yourself, it might end up looking like this: (not good)

Put a trans am on a couple cinder blocks in front of it... that'll cover it just fine.

Why not just repair or upgrade the existing A/C unit?

EDIT: Target carries portable/wheeled a/c units that plug into the wall and 'exhaust' out a window using a dryer vent style setup.

you guys are being down right mean.

I thought about doing that in my wood shop.

They make window units that cool and heat so you may consider that if heat in the winter is ever an issue.

I've seen those but want my floor space & the open window sounds like a conflict w/ my alarm system. Don't need it to be portable.

    Budget constraints.

I'd say sell a car...Miata or the RX to pay for modern AC....much cooler, much quieter and much cheaper than what is in the house now. How many hours do you spend in your house versus how many hours you spend in a car that can easily be sold for some serious homebound quality of life upgrades.

Split units are fairly inexpensive... and no open window required.

Lie the lawn mower in it's back and start it. That'll work as a fan. Oh, but wait, you'll need to put something on the handle to hold it down. Why not try a tree limb or something? :)

    Post pics. ;)

Have you looked into the portable units? They make A/C units for just the reason you're describing. They cost about $500, designed to stand on the floor and use an exhaust hose that vents out a window but with a smaller profile than cutting a hole for a window unit. Check out any major hardware store.

Upgrade to a new central system and change out the duct also. I had mine totally redone in January and have seen huge differences in the a/c and heating bills.
