I just bought a riding mower, so time to sell my old one. Problem is I have no clue what it is worth.

It's a '91 Troy-Bilt walk-behind, self propelled, twin deck, 33" mulching mower. Briggs & Stratton 8.5hp motor. Also has electric start.

Doesn't run right now, probably needs a carb rebuild.

    Anyone have any insight?

    1) Look for one on eBay and establish it's value
    2) Donate it to a local church, youth group, etc. that has gardening to do
    3) Take the appropriate write-off on your taxes.

Check eBay and craigslist to determine what it could be worth.

    an 18-year-old, non-working walk-behind mower is worth like $50-75.

That is what I was going to say; literally word for word. We live in a world where almost no one can repair their own engines, or even know where to being. I know if I saw "doesn't run," I wouldn't even consider it.

How big is the gas tank? Is the tank full?

In all seriousness, the market for a nonworking lawnmower must be about the same size as the market for a flood damaged 400i...

I'd donate it, and take the tax writeoff...

What do ya know? I threw it on Craigslist this afternoon, looking for the best offer. Got 3 calls within 2 hours. Of course, they asked what I would accept for it, so I threw out a number - $200. I did check E-Bay, and also Craigslist for comparisons, but could not find any. 1st caller lived pretty close by, and was on his way over. 2nd guy said he was very interested, but couldn't make it until tomorrow. I am getting the sense that $200 is a pretty good number for this mower. 1st guy shows up, and offers $150. I said I'd rather wait for guy #2 tomorrow. He said okay, and gave me $200.

Advertised in the afternoon, sold a few hours later. Thanks to Craigslist. Sadly, I now feel I could have got more for it. Oh well, I don't have to worry about it anymore. I get my brand new Cub Cadet rider tomorrow. Will enjoy mowing my lawn with a beer in the cup holder!

    You can't sell it.

you can't get everywhere with the rider, you need both.

My thoughts as well. Always a good idea to have a backup as well.

I have very few spots where the rider can't reach, and for those spots, I have a good 'ol fashioned manual mower! Or a weed whacker would be sufficient.
