Interesting car, although it seems to have been uncompetitive and later that fitted with a Chrysler engine and may have won a race in that format. On the Brazilian link the engine is said to be from a TR that crashed at Interlagos in 62 killing the driver, Rio Negro.

290MM #0606 was in Brazil with Landi in 59, and said to be fitted with a TR engine, so I it's possible the engine in the Furia came from this rather than a complete TR. Also #0606 is not reported on (except as parts) after this. TR #0726 was also in Brazil at this time and seems to have disppeared/got mixed up with (literally) #0606, so that's another possibility for the engine.

Does anyone have info on the Interlagos crash or entry lists?

There's a TR 'reconstruction' which uses/used TR identity #0726. It seems actually that this has frame parts of 290MM #0606. This was reported owned by Christofaro (according to Barchetta in the info on #0726) in 1985. He was the entrant of the Furia-Ferrari in 1971. Then reported as 'only some frame pieces left' in 1988.

It would be interesting to know if the TR engine from the Furia still exists. The reconstruction mentioned above has a GTE block, so what did Christofaro do with the original TR engine?

I have been searching some more and find that Camillo Christofaro also used/owned 250TR #0738 - twice. First he had it with it's Drogo GTOish rebody (maybe on loan) and won the Rio de Janeiro GP in 1965, and then apparently bought it back in 1970.

This is the time of the Furia-Ferrari so I'm thinking it even more likely that he used this engine in the Furia and then put it back in #0738.

Can any one confirm if #0738 still has it's original engine?

Like article of first night of this new site, I am daring while treating Ferrari as the participation of 250TR in Brazil. A very controversial subject, but that I intend to explain, if not completely, at least some obscure data what investigated help to brighten part of the history of these cars in our country. Two were Ferrari 250TR legitimate what came for Brazil, those of chassis nºs 0716TR-57 and 0738TR-57, in spite of the third one Ferrari to be treated also like 250TR, when in fact chassis was treated as one 290MM, that it came for Brazil with a motor 250TR, 0606MM.

To Ferrari 250TR # 0716 participated in 26/01/1958 of Thousand Km of Buenos Aires for Scuderia Ferrari and flown by Luigi Musso/Oliver Gendebien. Shortly afterwards of the proof it was acquired by Celso Lara Barberis and brought to Brazil. His first night in the national traces took place on the day 23/02/1958, in the Sporting, valid Chronic Proof Paulista in the 1st Stage of the Championship Paulista. In this proof Celso Lara Barberis was a pulley - position, it won the race and established the quickest turn, with the time of 3m48s7. On the day 22/06/1958 Celso Lara participated of the GP of the Cinqüentenário of the Japanese Immigration registering the pulley - position again (3m42s8), winning the proof and doing the best turn with the time of 3m47s2.

His third race in Brazil happened in the inauguration of the Circuit of the Bar of the Whistler, in the Rio de Janeiro. Again High it set sail in the pulley - position having to his side the pilot of the Rio de Janeiro, Henry Casini who was flying a Maserati 300S. Casini jumped in the front and led the first turn, but already in the next turn High it was assuming the leadership, beginning to take advantage on the Maserati.
Meantime, in the 18th one, of 25 turns predicted for the proof, when it arrived in the curve of the "Corsair", to Ferrari he began to present faults in the food system and stopped soon with problems in the system of food of fuel. Henry Casini put an end to that winning the proof.

On the day 30/11/1958, High it participated with to Ferrari 250TR of the preliminary proof of cars Sport of the South American Triangular Tournament, proof disputed in the circuit of Interlakes. They released only five cars, besides High, they were present José Gimenez Lopes, in Ferrari 250TR # 0738; Jean Louis Lacerda, in Ferrari 750 Monza; Álvaro Varanda, in Ferrari 250S and Christian Heins with a Porsche 550RS. Again High it set sail in the front, but it finished leaving on trial for problems, of this time in the differential one and, for general surprise, who finished winning was Christian Heins with the car of less power of the proof, the Porsche 550.

Celso Lara would fly it again 250TR on the day 31/05/1959, for opportunity of the Prize Peter Santalúcia, in Interlakes. With the car in order, High it had no difficulty in establishing the pulley - position, winning the proof and registering the best turn with the time of 3m43s8.

In the end of 1950 the car was sold to the team Lagartixa de Jean Louis Lacerda and Chico Landi. Chico Landi drove to Ferrari 250TR # 0716 in the Prize Juscelino Kubitschek for opportunity of the inauguration of Brasilia, on the day 23/04/1960. Of this proof Ferrari they announced three treated in this article and Chico Landi finished only in the fifth placing. Under the command of Moroni Giorgi it announced of the Prize President of the ACB, in Interlakes, finishing the proof in the 4th position.

In 1964 to Ferrari it was taken to Italy, where it received a body of 250GTO I Drug. It remained in Brazil during some years and was re-exported to Europe where it returned to his original condition of 250TR and at present, it participates of competitions of historical cars.

To Ferrari 250TR # 0738 was acquired in 1958 by Jean Lacerda da Scuderia Lagartixa. The car did his first night in the Proof Cinqüentenário of the Japanese Immigration in Interlakes, on the day 22/06/1958, under the driving of Chico Landi, which it left in the 7th turn, in proof won by Celso Lara Barberis in 250TR # 0716.

In 28/09/1958 to Ferrari 250TR it showed up in the Inauguration of the Circuit of the Bar of the Whistler, in the Rio de Janeiro, this time flown by José Gimenez Lopes, who obtained the second placing soon behind the Maserati 300S of Henry Casini. Again, with Gimenez Lopez driving, the car ended at fourth place in the proof of cars Sport, introduction of the South American Triangular Tournament when 30/11/1959 was disputed on the day, in Interlakes.

On the day 10/12/1958, Jean Louis Lacerda participated for the first time of a motor proof with to Ferrari 250TR in II Circuit of the Bar of the Whistler, where differential was obliged to leave with problems in, it proves that it was won by his companion of team Fritz D'Orey driving of Ferrari 750 Monza.

Finally, in 05/04/1959 250TR # 0738 won his first race in Brazil. The act happened in III Circuit of Pirajuí when drove by Jean Louis Lacerda.

On the day 31/05/1959 Jean Louis Lacerda disputed the Prize Peter Santalúcia in Interlakes, but it left on trial for mechanical problems.

The same Jean Louis Lacerda drove to Ferrari to the victory on the day 27/07/1959 in the Circuit of the Bar of the Whistler, in the Rio de Janeiro.

In the beginning of 1960 the car passed to the hands of Luciano Della Porta which fez sweats first night in the Stage of the South American Triangular Tournament in Interlakes. Della Porta finished at 9th place and next week the GP ran City of the Rio de Janeiro, in the Bar of the Whistler, ending at 7th place.

In the Circuit of Piracicaba day 13/03/1960, Della Porta obtained the third placing behind Alfa Romeo Corvette de Camillo Christófaro and the Porsche 550RS of Christian Heins, car that, in spite of less powerful was very much benefited by the connected circuit of Piracicaba.

In the commemorative proof of the inauguration of Brasilia, on the day 23/04/1960, Luciano Della Porta finished at as place when Ferrari was beaten only for 250TR/290MM # 0606 of Jean Louis Lacerda.

In the Proof President of the Motorcar Club of Brazil, when 12/06/1960 was disputed in Interlakes on the day, Della Porta again had to leave for mechanical problems.

In 500 Km of Interlakes, in 09/09/1960 the car conquered the second place, under the command of Luciano Della Porta and Chico Landi.

Again in the Rio de Janeiro in 05/11/1960, Luciano Della Porta announced of the GP City of the Rio de Janeiro. It was maintained in second during a good part of the proof finished them to me leaving.

In 1963, to Ferrari it was sent to Italy where he gained a body 250GTO I Drug.

After to return to Brazil, her then “250GTO I Drug” it announced of the Prize John Kennedy, in 11/10/1964 in the Race track of Interlakes, under the driving of Luciano Della Porta. The car woke great interest, but his presentation ended soon in the 5th turn with mechanical problems.

In 19/09/1965 the car was registered in the GP of IV Centenary of the Rio de Janeiro, proof disputed in the circuit of the Bar of the Whistler. In spite of great controversy around doubt if it was a GT or Prototype, the car that was flown by Camillo Christófaro beat the frightening Abarth Simca, up to that time unbeatable in the national motoring.

Sold to Paul Caesar Newlands of the Rio de Janeiro, to Ferrari GTO it participated of II Stage of the Championship of Rio de Janeiro in 04/06/1967, in the Race track of Jacarepaguá. In spite of having led the proof, it finished I have to leave it with problems in the system of food of fuel.

On the day 30/07/1967, Newlands obtained convincing victory in the Circuit of Petrópolis, beating two Karmann Ghia Porsche with bodies of fiberglass and the DKW Malzoni de Norman Casari.

In 06/08/1967 Newlands it participated of II Stage of the Championship Of Rio de Janeiro, in Jacarepaguá, but it was still obliged to leave in the beginning, in proof that marked his farewell of the national traces.

To Ferrari it finished suffering series of modifications in his body when there is gaining similar double lighthouses with them of Ferrari 365 GTB, work of the "carrozzieri" of the region of Three Rivers in the State of the Rio de Janeiro, returning in the beginning of the 70 years for the workshop of Camillo Christófaro in the Canindé, in Sao Paulo, where it remained some time. Next it was re-exported to Europe where it received again a body of 250TR and at present it participates of the historical events of classic cars.

To Ferrari 290MM # 0606M fez sweats first night in the traces for Scuderia Ferrari in the Spin of Sicily of 1956 having Luigi Musso driving who, meantime, had to leave little after Trapani, with problems in the electric part of the car.

In 27/05/1956 to Ferrari it participated of Thousand Km of Nürburgring, with Luigi Musso/Maurice Trintignant, who suffered an accident and left on trial.

In 12/08/1956 to Ferrari 290MM # 0606 won the GP of Sweden flown by Maurice Trintignant/Phil Hill. Next the car was sold to Jacques Swaters who competed in 1957 of several proofs, with distinction for the participation in 24 Hours of Le Mans under the driving of Jacques Swaters/Alain de Changy. The car left still in the beginning of the race with motor problems.

In 1959 290 of 3.500 had his motor cc substituted by one 250TR of 3.000 cc and sold to Jean Louis Lacerda of the team Lagartixa. His first night in national traces happened on the day 10/01/1960 for opportunity of the proof of the South American Triangular Tournament disputed in Interlakes, flown by Jean Louis Lacerda who left soon in the beginning of the proof.

In 17/01/1960, in the GP City of the Rio de Janeiro, in the Bar of the Whistler, Lacerda finished at 6th place, whereas, in Piracicaba it ended at 6th place.

The consecration of the car happened in Brasilia in 23/04/1960, in the argument of the GP Juscelino Kubitschek when Jean Louis Lacerda finished first of all.

New victory was conquered by Jean Louis Lacerda 12/06/1960 in the Prize President of the Motorcar Club in Interlakes.

When the Aguinaldo Góes was sold, to Ferrari 290 # 0606M it ended at as place in 500 Km of Interlakes, beaten only by the powerful Maserati 450S of Celso Lara Barberis/Ruggero Peruzzo/Emílio Zambello.

Like Aguinaldo Góes, with health problems, it could not participate of the proof “Anniversary ACESP”, disputed in Interlakes in 20/05/1962, it lent it to Fernando Mafra Moreira, more known as “Rio Negro“, pilot with little experience in competitions. Very enthusiastic, “Rio Negro“ began the proof “with everything”, filled with enthusiasm with the chance to run in so powerful Ferrari. Soon in the second turn, Rio Negro entered strongly in the curve 1, lost the direction and it shocked against the eucalyptuses that were in the leak area. The car was divided in two and Rio Negro had instant death. As Emílio Zambello, the car had the position of the altered pedaleira and perhaps that has done so that “Rio Negro“ trod in the gas pedal when it should tread in the brake and so the accident was inevitable.

    Would confirm your interesting theory.

    Thanks for this.

Which engines are in #0606 & #0726? I understand they are GTE units but I may be wrong.

If so what was the fate of the TR engines fitted to these cars? What was the engine# fitted in #0606?

Even more interesting would be to know what happened to the 290MM engine which was removed in Europe. Is it now lost?

    That's a horrendous crash!

Actually if you look in the Ferrari-Chevrolet thread you will see that it seems more likely that the engine in the Furia-Ferrari came from & returned to the Drogo GTO type rebuild of #0738.

Still waiting for information about what engine was in the car in your photo (which is presumably 290MM #0606 & fitted with a TR engine before it left Europe) and if it still exists.

Also, DOES THE FURIA STILL EXIST?

This should be the "modified" #0726 at a race in Brazil. Today, a #0726 exist, but its a reconstruction from what was left when the TR was found in Brazil in 1986.

Well found! It must have been designed by the Brazilian branch of the Marzotto family...

The photo is from an article in Ferrari World magazine n°14/1991. But I'm not sure that this is really #0726... If you search Camillo Christofaro on Google, you can find many infos and more photos. But there is no talk about a 250 TR. Only a "carretera" Chevrolet V8...

This car is nothing to do with #0726, or any other Ferrari. As you suggest it's what he describes as his 2nd 'carretera' based on a '37 Chevrolet with Christofaro's own design of rear suspension, and a claimed 500+ hp. Raced till '71 when it became uncompetitive:

I think it will transpire that the ex Christofaro car which was more recently called 0726 will be put back to 290MM spec because it is made of parts of 0606. I don't think Christofaro actually ever had any parts of 0726. This will probably re-emerge built up again from parts which are said to (and maybe really do) come from the real wreck of 0726.

Just another scan from that magazine (Ferrari World n°14/91). This is the car called #0726 during reconstruction or resurection in the 80's.

I send you the second piece of the puzzle. The gearbox and rear suspension will be used to manufacture the Christofaro's car.
If a chassis is the basic element of a car, who can now claim seriously that 0606 still exists?

Thanks for this photo which I haven't seen before.

I think there are two points here:

    1. Can the car get papers as 0606 to be used in classic events? If so this is good for the owner, good for some spectators and maybe not for others.

    2. If it is made clear which parts are original (which may well include the rear chassis section, transaxle & suspension), and which are replica or replacement, then anyone can see what the car actually is. Also of course the accuracy of the reconstruction is important. I hope it gets a 4 cam engine again! Personally I don't feel the neccessity to decide whether 0606 (or any other car for that matter) 'really still exists'. So long as I know what is what then that's fine with me.

246Tasman: for sure a 4-cam engine would be totally inaccurate.

Yes, of course you're correct. I've been too wrapped up in thinking about the 315S recently!

All the same finding or commissioning a Tipo 130S 2-cam engine won't be easy. Maybe the car will re-emerge with a Colombo V12 for the time being?

Hi Giotto, investigating 0726 I found this thread and went investigating a little further.
Camillo Christofaro received the remains of 0606 as a present from his dear friend Aguinaldo Goes after the crash and death of Fernando Mafra Moreira "Rio Negro" at Interlagos in May 20th 1962. ( I am working in the traslation of the complete letter of the eldest son of Aguinaldo Goes that tells the whole story)
Christofaro used according to the letter, the de Dion suspension and the fuel tank of 0606 for his Carretera 18 and stored the engine until he used it in la Furia Ferrari many years later.
In my investigation I found some nice pictures that make me believe that he also used the Borranis in his Carretera 18.

    The Ferrari of Aguinaldo Goes.

We have received an email from Mr. Sergio clarifying some details of the Ferrari 290MM 0606 that belonged to his father the driver Aguinaldo Goes which we transcribe next :
As the eldest son of Aquinaldo Goes, I would like to add some details about the history of Ferrari 290MM with engine 250TR, which ended in the hands of Camillo Cristofaro.
In 1961, my dad bought the Ferrari from Jean Louis Soares (Owner of a VW dealer called Famous Brands)
The car had the following details:
3,000 cc engine with 300 hp.
Yellow with a painted mustache and the # 81 done for 500 km of 1961.

About the RHD, my dad said that between turn 1 and 2 of Interlagos, he could see the grass come too close.
The brake pedal was on the right and the throttle in the middle, between the clutch and brake (imagine how the brain had to react with the inverted pedals)
De Dion suspension (which he considered very dangerous)
It had no seat belts. The drivers didn’t wear racing suits, just short-sleeved chemise Lacoste.
His partitipación in Interlagos 500km on 07/09/61 was as follows:
Before the race he went out to buy tires only to find 2 new and 2 used, he had to settle with those for the whole 500 kms, the best up front and the used ones in the rear.
He started in the second row with a dry track, and when it started to rain, the Ferrari got sideways between Turns 1 and 2, went through all the turn sideways and when he got the nose pointig at the tangent of the turn 2, he accelerated and managed to get out of trouble, his legs started shaking and he reduced the pace , left it in 4th gear and everybody started to pass him, until last place car passed him laughing grinning at him. My dad was upset, got it in third gear and began to accelerate, passing one by one.
He stopped in the pits to refuel and no one told him that the driver Jaime Guerra ran over the mechanic Victor Lassaco killing him in the pits.

His great friend Celso Lara Barberis, who ran together with Emilio Zambello and Ruggero Peruzzo in two cars, a Maserati 450S of 4,450 cc and a Maserati 300S 3.000cc, were running 1st and 3rd respectively.
After refueling, Celso Lara changed cars, leaving the 450S that was leading the race and got into the 300S was that was third, in an attempt to catch Aguinaldo and his Ferrari, but had to settle for 3rd 2 laps behind.

On 20/05/1962 my dad went to the ranch of Ribeirao Preto and I was with him when the phone rang and Fernando Mafra Moreira, better known as Rio Negro, asked if he could race the Ferrari , since there were only had 2 cars entered in the Festival ACESP and the minimum required for the race was 3 cars.
My dad said no, but Rio Negro insisted. and my dad said, take the start and get back to the pits, and let the other two race each other. Rio Negro asked for 2 laps, and dad screamed, just one lap he repeated several times, just one lap end let the other 2 race.
At that time the phones were the wall type the ones you had to crank to get a line with the operator.

Conclusion Rio Negro started the race, he didn’t enter the pits and perhaps because of the pedals arrangement he got confused and when he arrived to turn 1 too fast, the car skidded off the runway, hit the grass and as there was a plantation of eucalyptus he hit one braking the car in two, separating motor and gearbox, without damaging them.
The front half of Ferrari according to John Balder in his book, went 150 meters down the road and the back remained on the tree, with Rio Negro’s body trapped inside.
After that my dad called his dear friend Camillo Christofaro and told him, take the remains of the car as a present.
Camilo used the de Dion suspension and the fuel tank on his carretera 18, with a Corvette engine.
On 17/03/65 Camilo invited my dad to run the 1600 km Interlagos,to test the carretera 18 and they came in 3rd overall and 1st in TFL class.
Camillo stored the 12-cylinder engine, and used it a few years later in the Furia Ferrari created by Tony Bianco. The car was painted yellow with the same black mustache that my father ran in the 500 kms.
some time later a street Ferrari blew the engine and Camillo sold the racing engine to replace it.

This is great stuff.I have all the 2009 thread in the files on these two cars. Your research here is truly fantastic. Could this lead to a "Ferrari in Brazil" type publication similar to the Argentina book?? Let's hope so. I the mean time "keep on truckin" just one man's opinion tongascrew
