Seriously, if this wasn't so pathetic, I would be really PI$$ED... As I was putting the top up, I heard a tearing sound, like an old t-shirt tearing. I looked back and there was a ten inch clean tear in the soft top over the left rear pillar. The only thing I can think of is that it got pinched somehow in the frame the last time I closed the top (which would surprise me given the lengths I go to make sure that does not happen) and when the top stretched as it was being closed, the top just gave up the ghost. It is a 22 year old piece of cloth, so I really shouldn't be surprised. Now what do I do? Do I replace it? Repair it since it is a clean tear? or just leave the top down for the rest of the summer and deal with it in the fall. Any direction would be appreciated.

I am very bummed as the car was all original.

Just this morning I was musing that I had already dropped 2G this spring on the car, and I have only put 200 miles on her!!!

On days like this, I just sit back and say, that's what i get for not buying a Porsche.

The only good thing to come out of this, if there is anything, is that I don't have to worry about putting the top up after every drive...what a PITA that was.

Before you think the only option is to replace the entire top, please give this place a call ---> http://competizionecars.com/

Last week they had an F355 from New York getting the top repaired.

You cannot own a convertible car and hope the top will last forever. Tops that are falling apart, yellowed windows etc., they make the whole car look like crap. 22 years is a long time for a top, seriously, and if it lasted that long and still looked good you cant complain.

But I dont believe you can complain about it not being a Porsche or any other car, a top is a top, pretty much. I put a new one on the Mercedes 380SL a few years ago, the top was about the same age. The top on a Porsche, or a Jag, or anything else in the world wouldnt have lasted any longer.

So buck up and deal with it the best way you can. Either stitch it up and try to get through the summer, or bite the bullet on a new one. Once the new one is on youll probably realise how crappy looking the old one was. It most likely tore because the fabric wasnt soft and supple anymore.

The porsche comment was more tongue in cheek. Last week I spent almost $500.00 for an ignition tumbler...the same tumbler...of the same quality...is about 50-100 bucks for ANY other car. A new OEM top is going to set me back about $2400.00 before installation, add in the other odds and ends I took care of over the winter and let's just say the Ferrari budget has taken a 5G hit in the last three months and the car has never suffered mechanical hiccup of any kind since I have owned her! This year, so far, I am averaging $20.00 a mile (car hibernated most of winter), so, as I said, that's what I get for not buying a Porsche ;)

As I stated above, I really am not surprised---it is a 22 year old top. It tore for precisely the reason you stated, even though the window looked great, the fabric had just dried out from many years of use. I am just a little frustrated because I just finished getting over the ignition debacle and now this!

But just for the record, the top looked great right before it broke. I am WAY to OCD to allow my Ferrari to be in any kind of disrepair. Judge for yourself.

22 years on a top is pretty good, we only got 15 (although not torn the glue was disignerating). We ended up paying around $700 for an aftermarket top from Rich and Famous. I waited for the winter to install it but it kind of sucked working in the cold. Maybe do it in late september or take it to a pro in the winter. I was quoted $750 to have it installed by a local upholstery shop. Fortunately when I opted to do-it-myself I had the help of a friend skilled in restoration. It is a dooable project and allows you get a look at some hidden parts of your car. But, if you have to have the little horse in the window it will cost you.

Cool video. I love the sound of the exhaust.

My 1984 Mondial has the original top. No tears.... yet. (Knock on wood). Though it is old and dried up. The window is yellow. I wash it with an uphoistery shampoo vacuum and mild soap.

On one side over the window, the canvas is very thing, close to ripping. I took it to an uphoistery shop and they glued a few strips of canvas from underneath. It looks pretty good. It will keep the top going until it is time to replace it.

    Good luck.

Have it sewn and duplicate the stitching on the other side done to match for now and find a new top in the fall or when your budget allows Any boat canvas shop will be able to handle the repair . Good luck,Gilligan

Thanks Dave...you were right on the money on that one. They have done a ton of Mondials and quoted me a price on the spot. Brand new top, installed, 2G. I was going to do it ASAP, but now I am thinking that I am going to do it at the end of the summer. I find the top to be a major PITA. It's kind of liberating to be able to leave the top down without worrying about shrinkage, creases in the plastic, etc.!!!

Dave, how is your Rich and Famous top holding up? They said I could save about $400.00 by using that top, but that they have had some issues with them in the past.

    Thanks again everyone...

    Joe,

You should have just called me first and saved yourself all this aggravation.

Who knows everyone on the Main Line when it comes to this stuff???

    Moi!! :D

Wait until the fall, leave the top down all summer. Stick a roll of duct tape in the trunk. IF you get caught out in the rain, just tape up the hole until you get home.

Uh oh! So far so good. It looks exactly like the original except that the inside liner is black instead of tan. I did get the German canvas which was a little extra money. Also they do not include the two 1 1/2 inch wide straps. I asked them to make some up but they did not sew the important non stretchable nylon in the center (however, I am sure they would if you asked them to). Also, the fit over the rear buttresses is not perfect (a little loose revealing a slight wrinkle). As far as holding up, I don't expect any trouble. The top appears to be very well made.

For $400, I would probably go with the recommendation of the shop.

If It wasn't such a long drive I would run it up to cars n coffee Pa and show it to you. I would also like to get a look at your car one of these days.

    Ciao, Dave

Nice video Joe and sorry to hear about your top. Although the timing for repairs is rarely in our favor, they are inevitable. I'm sure you'll be much happier with the replacement top.

    Yep,
Well I just bought a new spider top from Ricambi, for when the car is parked outside at events, etc. I am really excited about it. Everybody has their pet peeves, and mine was the soft top on the Mondial, which I always thought was the most ill-conceived and executed POS. I am not going to miss dealing with the crappy OEM latches, which are always one click away from failing, one bit this summer. Who knows, maybe I'll never put the top up again :)

You see...there is always a silver lining ;)

Actually, the power top on my Porsche 993 cab had to be guided into position or the lining would snag and stretch.

    What he said.

Hey, you could buy a Ferrari California...

I think I already addressed my point. Look, I love my Ferrari, but I reserve the right to complain. If you recall, two weeks ago my girl's ignition quit and if it wasn't for Phil T finding a locksmith willing to work on the car, she would still be sitting there. Then, second run out, my soft top tears. So pardon me for stewing a little bit.

As an aside, I am beginning to warm up to the California and I think once more of us get up close to one, the general perception will change.

There will be no complaining in the 308/328/Mondial section, please.

    That's why we have a 348/355 board.

I dunno what OCD has to do with this vid clip but it's great! :) I'm sure it took a little bit of time to set up the different shots but I love it! Now get back to it, but have your cam man use a tripod :D

No worries Joe - the 'interwebs' boards are rife with otherwise well-intentioned folks who it seems struggle with staying on the topic at hand. Like me - my other post and this one have nothing to do with the topic, but at least I'm not telling you not to complain :D

Egads! I just pulled a Tex and double posted  :D

    :)

I showed the video just to prove that this wasn't some ratty soft top that tore on me. Unfortunately, I can't take the credit for the video. A bunch of C&C guys went for a good drive and Bob Craig's (Rcraig) teenage son video taped some of the driving from the side of the road. Considering it was so informally taken, I am really impressed with his son's handywork!
He takes some great videos for us...I wish I had his talents!

BTW, Bob is one heck of a photographer, take a look at some of his old threads when you get the chance, his work is stunning IMHO.
