USA FERRARI F40

When the car was offered for sale in 2004 or 05 (?) I believe it was advertised as factory leather seats. I never doubted it... but I don't know for sure...

Mansell's 80022 came with red nomex seats. The ones in the image you provided are from wen the car was in France and they had been re-upholstered. Badly.

I thought race drivers were suppose to be smart. That looks like some YouTube punk with more money than brains.

 

I think the burnouts are a traditional right of passage 'thing' amongst World Formula One Driving Champions (& others), performed in sheer exuberance to entertain their many fans. In fact, I think some of them even feel compelled not to disappoint fans who have come to expect a routine smokey doughnut display whenever the day's work is done. In this instance with Mansell in the F40, it was at the conclusion of a Ferrari demonstration day in the late 80s (1989 Im fairly certain) at Silverstone where there was much smoke!

I have seen these burnouts performed by other World Champions besides Mansell: Andretti, Schumacher, Alonso, Hamilton and surely others. Perhaps to you they all look like You Tube punks with more money than brains, but I wouldn't worry too much about either their wealth or their brain-power or the ratio thereof.

No harm done, I love watching it though, as Im sure do millions around the world!

I'm certain that yourself and the other NASCAR fans find it big fun. With the exception of the winning of the driver's championship, I'm certain the murmur of punk is heard from the F1 owners lips when this rarity occurs at this level, regardless of who is at the helm.

Ah man you guys are so right. What was I thinking about? Maybe I'll take one of the rides out, why not the F40 since this is the F40 thread and it's worth less than a tenth of an F1 car, and burn the rear tires off by dropping the clutch at redline in front of the local high school. Wait a second, Joe's point was they're doing it in someone else's car-maybe I could use his F40? That's kinda one of those rights of passage no? I can hear the applause now. Yeah man thrashing a fine tuned auto about, it's what life is all about-how kewl. I'll get right on that as soon as I finish pounding these paint cans shut with a Rolex.

 

I enjoy watching the winner's burnouts after races. It's a little outrageous but it's fun. Lighten up and light 'em up... occasionally

Correct, its just FUN and just 1 pair of rears out of the stock of 50 they bring to the races. I bet the owners ask them to make sure they put on the show afterwards.

Here is my personal favorite, the "hand-waving burnout" - ie performing doughnuts and waving to the fans at the same time! Have you seen the "flag-waving burnout"? Now that has to be seen to be believed...

You come off as a complete scrooge [or insert other word here] because none of your analogies make any sense or have any bearing on a Fomula One driver doing a burnout at the racetrack at the end of the day's proceedings.

1 pair of rear tires is sacrificed and a transmission that will be rebuilt anyway is exercised. So what? People love to see it!

When Mansell did those doughnuts in his F40 you'll note that he was still driving for Ferrari and the factory would maintain his F40 for him. As a matter of fact the car was GIFTED to him by Ferrari SpA.

Your analogy with using a Rolex to strike paint cans is utter nonsense. Hitting paint cans with a finely crafted piece of jewelry such as a Rolex would inflict permanent and perhaps irreparable damage, and spectators are not lined up thousands deep wanting to see it.

By your frame of mind I suppose all the fellows below including the late great Ayrton Senna, are wasting good champagne and they are all You Tube Punks ??? Jeez man, you gotta lighten up for your own sake!

Smokey doughnuts and champagne celebrations are motoprsports traditions that are probably here to stay. Nobody really cares if you dont see the fun in them...

Again, great pics Joe. The sport/hobby is not worth my limited time if it's not fun. I was gonna write about how I have never fried a clutch or drivetrain when I do the rare burnout and how many people put more stress on their cars just pulling away from stoplights on hills but I don't think that anybody is ready to hear that stuff. hahaha

whats wild is that those dudes are SO experienced in their cars, just RIPPIN' it, that they can, on demand, and in control, light up a top 10 burnout so good it looks awsome on youtube or TV. i feel like if i won a race, and went to do a burnout, i'd stall the car!!<g>

With their extreme power-to-weight ratio F1 drivers use electronic aids to prevent them smoking the tires each some they leave the pits. Its probably fairly easy for them to light the tires up actually.

I notice that with less tire and less weight its easier to get wheel-spin in the GTO than in the F40 (not that Im trying too hard)...

On most race cars in this caliber have brake bais adjustable in the cockpit, so the driver puts more brake up front and slip the rear wheels for a great burn out.
