I just read the workshop manual of 328 ( thanks to Marco B. for sharing! ) and I noticed that the Euro version has 270 hp, US version 260 hp and the Swiss version ( CH ) ... only 255 hp? I knew about the 10 hp difference between the Euro and US versions but I believed the Swiss version had 260 hp like the US engines.

What are the exact technical differences between all these F105 C? It is not only a matter of having a catalyst installed?

    Thanks!

Would it be difficult to convert to Euro specifications?

As you said, add to the above the presence of the catalyst that Euro model does not have and I think it really get expensive...

You will never feel the difference. I drove them back to back when they were still new cars and there is very little difference in engine output. If you wanted to the first thing to do is change the pistons. If I did that I certainly would not stop at the stock base model compression.

Brian would you know waht the respective compression ratios are?Do you know where the Australian delivered cars fall? They do have cats so I would think that they would be closer to US spec.

I think you are correct about this as the mechanical configurations of the US and CH 328 engines are virtually identical, and the 260 HP US vs 255 HP CH is just related to a diference how the HP specs were given/"fudged". The US spec of 260 max HP is at 7000 RPM while the CH spec of 255 max HP is at 6750 RPM. I can believe that a single sample engine of either type might make it's max HP at a slightly different RPM, but I don't believe that the average RPM for max HP from all US version engines occurs at 7000 and the average RPM for max HP for all CH version engines occurs at 6750 RPM. Any tax laws in CH that would make not exceeding 190 kW desirable? ;)

It wasn't a tax issue Steve. Switzerland actually had very strict emission laws and the strictist noise laws of any market for Ferrari. There was more noise reduction efforts taken with the Swiss motors and the injection system was different. I have a little experience with them and I think it would be correct to give them a lower HP rating. It is small difference though.

According to the parts book which is a pretty good source, U.S., Austria and Switzerland have 9.1:1. Everyone else has 9.8:1

OK, understood (I am now having a vague recollection that the CH CIS injector part number is an unobtainium special).

Without going to the parts book there were some ratio changes for different markets and is one of the reasons many feel one type has so much more power that another. Much of it was in gearing and not the motor.

CH imposed use of catalysts as early as 1987. This has taken many manufacturers by surprise as they didn't have any catalyst equipped cars at the time. Especially Italians were in a very bad position (Lancia, FIAT and Ferrari).
The difference is certainly theoretical and only due to the addition of cats.
You should know that no 308 engine ever left Maranello with more than 218bhp while Ferrari claimed 255bhp. A stock 328 is closer to 240 in the best case US or whatever version.

Well not really. Many markets required cats, and in some, like Germany it was an option so cat equipped cars were quite available. Cats are not what caused the lowered HP in the Swiss cars because like I said we had them in the US. Have a look at the parts book sometime and you will see many changes in the Swiss cars. Your country also had the lowest mandatory noise levels of any country as well and that alone caused many changes.

Switzerland was the first European country to only allow selling catalyst equipped cars on it market in 1987. No other European country imposed such measures at the time. Others followed in 1989.

    Are you drunk? Insane?
Whatever makes write phrases like this is not really my concern but you should read the posts and at least try to understand them before replying or commenting.
The thread starter asked why CH models look different on paper. I provided him with a plausible explanation. Your cretinous comments add a lot of value to the discussion, please keep them coming.

More likely there is no difference except each country specifying the testing standard which must be met for advertising hp.
Notice you didn't mention the Japan or Australian or Saudi and UK 328s which also differ slightly from the Euro 328.
