I want to do a compression test on my 328 & apart from doing it with a warm engine, all the plugs out & WOT I think I read somewhere that I need to disable the ignition in order to stop it being damaged/burning out. Is this just a case of pulling a fuse or there some other way to do it (assuming it is necessary). Can anyone advise please?

It's more important that you disable the fuel pump -- which you can do by removing the appropriate fuse.

No fuse on the ignition system -- if you want to disable, you'd have to unplug the 25-pin connector from the MicroPlex ignition ECU.

Thanks for that - looks like a great idea & I like the concept.

Now I just need to figure out how to connect it to the starter solenoid (which you can't even see!) easily & quickly & probably whilst also working around a hot exhaust into the bargain!

Need to go & have a look at this one .....

It is much easier to do this way and you can never hurt the engine. I am a little bias as I do have a lift and the starter wiring is easy to access from the bottom.

This is real easy on the TR where the starter is on the top. the starter wire is the white one. unplug this one from the starter connect one leg of the starter button there and the other to 12v power source like the main battery connection on the starter. just make sure the car is not in gear when you engage the starter..

    Regards, Jim

I modified my starter button years ago by cutting off one of the clips and installing a female spade connector in its place. Doesnt fall off in the middle of the job anymore.
