I have heard these early cars have "electronic issues" although I have not found a more detailed description of the specific problem(s). I understand they have no power steering (some see that as an advantage). Obviously, they are two-wheel drive. Many do not like the dash.

Can someone expound on the electronics and please summarize what other early-model sorting out these cars came with (ie other problem areas or things to look for)?

    Thanks.

original chain tensioners need to be upgraded (most if not all already been done now imo)

the big dash is ugly and is an issue for the short guys

all diablos could have some "electronic issues" ....from 91 to 6.0

I test drove a car that had engine light warnings on etc. I later had it inspected and it was a dog. I paid more and got a mint car with no warning lights etc.

I have heard that the electrical gremlins are to some extent expected at some point and as as above, in all cars and unfortunately quite normal.

    #1,

check the clutch, clutch, and check it again.

Emilio is correct - look into the chain tensioner. The dash is ok. The brakes could use updating, if you want to drive the car fast. Brembo and Movit are aftermarket brake options, if you want better equipment to stop the car.

I don't know if it is true, but I heard it is possible for the catalytic converter to become clogged and to potentially start a fire ? Ask your mechanic. The 91-93 2wd cars, are amongst the best cars of the entire series.

Yes, manual steering is awesome !

the dash could be changed for the later 5.7 diablo's one (it is almost a do it yourself job ..if you have some skills)
Ralf is correct early diablos have same brakes as countach....
now given they were not that good on a countach and a diablo weights more and is faster...well it could benefit from an upgrade (some kits may need 18" wheels thoug )

yes, catalitic converters may start fires sometime and other "ugly" engine damages....better to get rid of them asap! car will also be lighter, faster and run much cooler without them :)

  6. The internal driveshaft seems to be a weak spot. There is no replacement for the euc either. If your's is bad, another will have to come from a different car, or you will rewire the car and adapt an aftermarket system.

Dash: I would live with the dash.

Cat Fires: Probably fit a Kreisiegg exh w/ rest pipes (cat fire is a good rationalization for the upgrade!).

ECU: The comment about the ECU is a bit scary. I have another car with a standalone ECU. Anyone know if any of the standalone's work on Diablos (AEM o others)??? I would think with the seemingly recent proliferation of forced induction on the exotic car market that standlone ECU's would be available??? (not suggesting I have any thoughts of adding a turbo to a Diablo, just wondering if this is an alternative to a faulty ECU)??

Electronic Gremlins: Are the later 5.7's any better then early or all about the same +/-???

Brakes: I did not know the brakes were a Countach carryover? In what year were new brakes developed for the Diablos?

Clutch: I guess these have become infamous. I have heard a full replacement can exceed $10K with $5k being a low figure.

Thanks to all for the input. This is very useful.

    Why is it that expensive?

Where can we buy a clutch for an early Diablo and how much it cost?

Can you tell me more about DIY job?

    Cheers!

i've seen light weight clutches for about 3k there abouts, but the real cost is fitting as changing a clutch in a Countach/Diablo/Murcie is an engine out job.

At least by 1998, they offered good brakes.

Unfortunately, you will have power-steering after 1993.

The higher figure will usually include preventative maintainance. The approach with the clutch service, is somewhat similar to the belt service on the flat-12. You can pay to change just the belts, but that is not a good idea. If the engine has already been removed (L clutch service/F belt service), it is a good idea to take care of other potential ancillary items.

Don't forget, the early Diablo's also had an issue with the ring and pinion. Under hard acceleration, the splined portion of the pinion would break. There was an upgrade offered by Lamborghini on the replacement part which solved the problem.

The comments about the ring & pinion and the Haltech ECU are helpful.

I like the no power assist and 2-wheel driver aspects of these early cars. I need to do some homework on brake upgrade.

    Thanks to all.
