Just got back from a sea trial at Marine Max in Sarasota. 29 ft Sea Ray Sundeck, 2008, new. MSRP $107K. They will sell for $88K. ~$400/month to stor eit there. Haven't started to haggle yet. Nice boat...was wondering what people thought is a reasonable discount in Florida in this market, given that it is a 2008 leftover (though he assures me it is the "last one" and I shouldn't dilly-dally ). Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
That does not sound like too much of a discount to me. I think you could go for something like $75k and two years free storage??? I sold my 2004 model year boat that cost $25k new for $12,500 at the beginning of last summer which I thought was a pretty strong price. Today I would think the same boat would go for around $8,000 in this "receeding" economy. BT

And those are "ask" prices. The buy price is usually a fair amount lower in todays market. A 290 is not a complicated boat but sometimes there is an advantage in buying a low hour boat that was owned by a knowledgable owner. Every boat I've had has list of first year issues and I got to sort them out. I bought a 9 month old boat with 32 hours in October and I've put 130hrs on it and have had no issues. Good luck with you purchase. It's a great time to buy.
When it comes to boats, the water is tinted with blood! Many dealers have gone belly up and many others are heading the same way. Marine Max has been hurting tremendously, therefore you are in the driver seat. The discount they offer should go up and the storage should come down. Check the website of National Liquidators at www.yachtauctions.com and you'll get an idea of what is going on. Good luck.
Thanks guys. I have used this information to begin the haggling process. I would really ove to learn to sail and get a sweet sail boat but the wife and 2 boys pretty much said they wanted a powerboat. I guess for a couple years it will be good to learn the "ropes" of the sea...but then I'd really love a 44' sailboat!
What a tool. I just got an email back from the sales guy. He tried to make it sound as though a boat with 40 hours is a "wildcard." But he'd consider an offer from me if it comes with a deposit and then he'll "run" it up the ladder. Is that the norm in the boating world, to ask for a deposit BEFORE negotiating a price? 'Cause it sure ain't in the Ferrari world.
Hey guys, what do you think my 28' Powerquest will bring? http://www.boattrader.com/listing/2001-Powerquest-280-Silencer-95060197
He's a ******. You pay a surveyor $500 to go through the boat and you've mitigated your chance of getting a stinker to about the same chance as a new boat. You're buying a very simple boat. Go to the manager and tell them you want to work with someone else. Be careful with MMax. They just soaked my new to boating neighbor. I think she paid about $50K too much for her 350 Sundancer. In my experience, there are some good boat brokers but most are worse than the stereotypical used car salesman. Sorry it's such a hassle to buy something that's supposed to be fun.
Hold on to your cash until you have an agreement on the price. If they do not accept, walk and go to some other dealer. There is no shortage of good boats out there.
As if exotic car prices aren't f'ked enough.......... pricing on boats right now makes the exotic cars look like stellar investments!!! If you're in the market for a boat, you should be able to get an amazing deal right now....... Money talks.
I'd go for a Sea Ray before an Ebbtide. You're best to stick with major brands because they will be easier to sell later. They still depreciate, a lot in today's market, but priced properly they sell faster. Go to a different MM office if you didn't like the one you dealt with. Find a salesperson you feel comfortable with and don't be afraid to haggle, but don't expect 50% off. My guess is their cost is somewhere between 25-30% below MSRP, so there's little incentive to go much below that. The 29 Sundeck currently has a $7,000 incentive from SeaRay (www.searay.com). I would ask for 20% off MSRP less the additional $7,000, which would put you around $78,000.
sorry to hijack thread but staying on topic...how much do you guys think a 21'mastercraft with 250 hours, with trailer and cover go in immaculate condition may sale for?
There is a blue book for boats that will give you a fair market price. If you do not have a way to locate one, any boat dealer / broker should be able to help. Mastercraft has a good name in its niche market, but for a 5 yr old boat I would not offer more than half the price of the new boat. I would probably start with $ 30,000.00 and reach a common ground with the seller $ 5,000.00 at each increment.
I haven't registered or used this site, but you may want to try it: www.bucvalu.com or search for similar boats and their asking prices here: www.bucnet.com
