I have been reading about Paul Hawkins for a while now, from all accounts Hawkins was a bit of a dare devil, a driver who drove the wheels off anything and never gave up. For many it seems 0858 is the runt of the Ferrari 60's racing car litter, for me it remains one of the most desireable, that shape and the way Hawkins drove it to such success in South Africa, it should be noted then what Hawkins drove the car it was already in Can Am spec.

Reading how for over 30 laps he and David Piper changed positions many times a lap, Hawkins overtaking in places where only the extremely brave would even try let alone be able to actually get past the car in front. Its a vivid picture the Tean Gunston Ferrari and the Green Piper P3 fighting lap after lap.

Hawkins enjoyed great success in the Springbok Series.
    Some of the highlights included:

    3rd place 1967 Kyalami 9 Hour driving 0858(ahead of him was 004 a Dino 206S, and a Mirage Ford)
1st place 1967 Cape 3 Hour, David Piper finished 3rd in 0854 after the long battle...
2nd place: 1967 Lourenco Marques 3 Hour, again behind the Mirage Ford.
1st place: 1967 Pietermaritzburg 3 Hour, again beating Piper in 0854
1st place: 500km Race a the East London Grand Prix circuit.

Pretty impressive record I think but those guys that saw Hawkins race back in this 1967 season say the way he drove was a huge crowd pleaser. 0858 was back in 1969 but in the hands of Alistair Walker it never had the same degree of success it had with Hawkins.

Apologies in advance if not all of my info is correct.

Yes. In 1967 Hawkins finished second at Kyalami in a Lola with John Love.

    Jacques,

    Very nice indeed!

I must say that I prefer the car in the more traditional red.

    The Springbok series was great!

Off hand could 0858 been the first Ferrari to race with cigarette sponsorship. Have another picture somewhere of Piper and Hawkins side by side in 0854 and 0858....

Correct, though the car didnt finish many races in the 1969 series due to reliability problems.
