996 GT3 -- Considering purchase of this 7k mile car

just my opinion and a little OT but,

i've been seeing 996 GT3 in the $60's-70k. some higher mileage and or track rats lower. i've seen a couple 997 GT3's in the high 80's and probably going lower with the 2010 coming out soon. so were looking at a $10k-30k spread at top dollar ???

i am no fan of the ice cube 996 styling and the interior. especially the dash. i don't think the Gt3s have the RMS or oil starvation problems that the normal 996's have (someone can correct me on that).

as times passes, i think the 996 styled car we be on par with the 74-77 2.7 911's of years past as far a desirability.

that said, if you can buy it rock cheap.........

 

I can't see a link, price, or any details, but an '04 - '05 GT3 can go anywhere from $50K (track driven car) to high $60K's (maybe even low $70K's) for a low mileage '05. I've got my 30K mile, CPO til Aug., 2004 CA car at "moderate condition" up for sale at $56K (including Euro. GT3 seats, RS wing, and Techquipment "cage" (really a glorified harness bar).

Common issues to look for are: tires in need of replacing, aftermarket exhausts and "chip upgrades" casuing CEL's, brake rotors (usually front) with cracks which might need replacing (somewhat costly from $600 a pair to $1800 a pair depending on source), faulty oil pressure sending unit in engine, poor condition coolant hoses, LSD that has been blown, and that's about it. Overall, a very sturdy car, engine (get compression check and rev limiter overruns from a PPI) and transmission - it's more about condition and history in my mind driving prices.

Let me know if I can help further. I somewhat disagree on the 997 GT3 pricing: yes there are a few bargains out there, but most are at a $30K difference to the 996 GT3 still. And if you don't want electronic nanny's (or mandatory sunroof), then the 996 GT3 is the way to go.

PCCB's are crazy expensive to replace. Check them for cracks and if so at 7k miles you know how a car was driven.

Nice car. One of the best I have owned to date. I used mine as a daily driver--I can't tell you how much fun that was! Congrats, and please post pics.

 

I've had mine for a year and love it. It's an absolute weapon, and has been very reliable. I'm sure as with any performance car, if it sees abuse from track days or from sitting in a garage all the time, it will have problems, but regularly driven, it's been great.
I think the 9 GT3 is a fantastic performance bargain in the Porsche world. Dollar for dollar, I think you get an epic car compared to the others in the price bracket, or you have to pay considerably more for a 7 so you get all the add ons.
