I have a doubt regarding the winning Ferrari of the Grand Prix of Portugal 1954. Was the 750 Monza or one 375Plus? The classification of the gp was: 1- Froilan Gonzalez - Ferrari 750 Monza? 2- Mike Hawthorn - Ferrari 750 Monza? 3 - Masten Gregory - Ferrari 375MM (#0370AM) - no doubts about that you can see an article about the race in 1957 - VI Grande Prémio de Portugal (Monsanto-09/06/1957) in: http://ferrariemportugal.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2008-06-09T15%3A10%3A00-07%3A00&max-results=7 Thanks Manuel Taboada
Gonzales seems to have been driving with 750 Monza 0428M, Hawthorn with 750 Monza 0440M. Best wishes, Kare
Regarding 0428M is possivel, I already doubt that 440M it has run it in the Grand Prix of Portuagl 54, because that Monza ran especially for French pilots in France. Thanks for your information, Manuel Taboada
I think Gonzalez drove 0440M, the same car Maglioli drove at Senigallia 2 weeks later. Here are the photos of both entries. 0428M IMHO has differences as can be seen in this photo of De Potago's car in the 1954 Carrera. Pictures can be found in the 1954 Ferrari yearbook : Gonzalez won the race with number 4 and Hawthorn finished second with number 5. Gregory had number 9...
I have many pics of these early Scaglietti spiders : 0440M had more vertical headlights and shorter nose than the beautiful 0428M and so must be the Hawthorn car. 0428M is the Gonzalez car. You can NOT compare with pics of 0428M at de Portago period as the body of 0428M had already been altered with new nose and differents details...
Hello Cyril, I have not seen full body photos of Gonzalez's car at Portugal so I trust you are right. Best Boudewijn
I must add that the Cavallino emblem on fender was just above the side vent on 0440M (like number 5) and fitted more forward on 0428M (like number 4)... And last thing : exhaust are more visible (lighter colour ??) on 0440M than 0428M.
There was no 375 Plus for Pampa's Bull at Lisbon in 1954, but the error - another long propagated one - is to call "750 Monza" these two "750 Sport" works cars, 0428MD and 0440MD. Both are based on type 501 chassis with 4-speed transaxle, as opposed to the 5-speed box and type 510 chassis of the 1955 750 Monza (and Mondial 2). All 501s had the suffix MD. A simple way to recognize 0428MD from 0440MD is the oil tank flap on the right hand fender: it opens backwards on 0440MD (As shown on Maglioli's car at Senigallia) and the opposite way on 0428MD, as shown on the photo of Portago in Mexico (thanks Petersen Publishing).
The VW "employee" on the left with Portago on the Pan American Mexico pix (thanks Petersen Publishing) is Prinz Hohenlohe. Nobody cares, but who knows the name (not the s/n) of the girl ? Dorian Leigh ? Thanks
Tom, you are right about the suffix "MD". It seems that almost all the Scaglietti spiders made in late 1954 had it except several cars (0442M etc...)
Aardy 0442M is a 250 Monza (chassis tipo 117), a V-12, nothing to do therefore with any "Mondial". And Scaglietti is not concerned either: remember, the early 500 Mondial were bodied by Pinin Farina. What about the girl with Portago ?
Agree she looks like Dorian Leigh but not 100 % sure. I have your pic somewhere but can't remember where. May be the caption would say who she is ? I will search.
Great informations! Great photo of the Gonzales in Monsanto 1954! Boudewijn: it is possivel that I use it in my blog? Thanks for all
I bought the photo years ago in Argentina. There's no idea who's photo it is. I think there would be no objection to use it unless someone would object.
You can see in this photo all the Ferraris that race in GP Portugal 1954 in Monsanto. This photo was taken in Palma & Morgado in Lisbon, the garage who the Scuderia Ferrari doing his maintenance. besides all who spoke already we can see the nº11 735Monza (#0444M) from the portuguese driver Vasco Sameiro, and the 375MM (#0366AM) from Casimiro de Oliveira. http://i726.photobucket.com/albums/ww269/manueltaboada/palmaemorgado.jpg
Yes, above and left to the right, is the 166MM (#0040M), the 225S (#0180ET) and (covered) the 212 Export (#0163E). The white car (nº20) is the Jaguar XK 120 (#S678053) from the portuguese driver D. Fernado de Mascarenhas-Marquis Fronteira.
Just one more question: The car (photo of Portugal GP 54) nº 11 is a 735 Monza (0444M). Do you agree? It was driven by the portuguese driver Vasco Sameiro. MT
Dear Cyril, the build sheet shows the s/n as 0444 MD . Telaio tipo 501,Motore tipo 735. On the engine sheet also a note "Motore Prototipo".. regards Ivo
