How does this comment of yours mean anything else than JB is average at best: Alonso drove the snot out of the Minardi (very poor car), Renault and McLaren AND I've watched Alonso go over the edge many times. Some resulted in spectacular crashes, but atleast he was trying to be fast ... JB didn't make the Honda do anything. I believe he was beaten by RB last year ... might be wrong here? Again, you judge driver ability in DOGS of cars not good ones ... otherwise we would all be F1 stars! I don't agree that JB was being smart, just driving at his average level ... and now the very good Brawn is allowing him to just beat the way passed it RB. Pete
SRT Mike, Mate it is a very common problem with this thing called motorsport that average drivers end up winning the major prize. It happened in Australian V8 Supercars a couple of years ago when the Holden Racing Team driver Rick Kelly won the championship because his car and consistency got him there. The guy since has done nothing. Yes JB is a way better driver than I am , yes he is very smooth and yes I will be happy if he wins, but happier for Ross Brawn ... and yes he deserves it BUT that does not mean he is the best or great driver or a driver worth writing in the history books. All great drivers were/are able to lift their performances when the car can't do it for them, ie: Nurvolari, Fangio, Moss, GV, Stewart and recently MS. JB has never ever done a single performance that has made anybody go "heck how did he do that", never, thus he cannot be a great. His closest was the pole at Monaco, but GV put his Ferrari on pole when he didn't even have a chance at leading the WDC ... that is what greats do, not just putting the best car on the grid on pole. Pete ps: Everybody can safely remove the crow IMO
To me Button is the perfect measure for a team to see how their car is in realtion to the others. He makes few mistakes and doesn't appear to abuse equipment, so chances are if it is a DNF it will be a mechanical failure. In a superior car like the Brawn/Mercedes he is winning, in an inferior car like the BAR/Honda he struggled to score points. So you could say he is like a "control" in an experiment, his performance doesn't influence the results if you want to know just how good (or bad) your car is. That would make him average, almost by definition. But as I said earlier he makes few mistakes and is easy on equipment so that makes him above average at finishing, and given his car this year, winning. But is he Jim Clark, Senna, or even Alonso? I don't think so. Button needs to have a proven teammate (like a Rubens) finishing eight places behind him, not in second, for me to be really impressed.
Jenson = average at best. Period, and I gladly eat crow when deserved: not in JB's case. Remember all the times he was more mouth than action regardless of car. Including his mouth towards Lewis in his rookie and last year. r
oh, he could be the pants off of me driving, but I'm no one to do much more than be an arm-chair quaterback however, I stand on my woids[sic]
Sorry I prefer chicken I admire your blind support of your country men. Something New Zealanders, as I, could learn from I guess. Pete BTW: How does the English team do at A1 GP?. Australia struggles but NZ does alright. Italy snck big time ...
He must be joking because Senna never raced a Tag/McLaren.... As for the Crow eating, if everyone who deserved some Crow actually ate it, the Crow would become an endangered species !
JB, Webber and 'last years hero' have convincingly proved that if your car is good you will do well. There is no proof either way that any of the above drivers are superstars or have better than average F1 ability. Webber is if you like the control member of this experiment 'cause I'm sure all British fans will agree that he has average race ability. Take JB away and Webber would have a good chance at being WDC this year, thus obviously the BrawnGP car is slightly better than the Red Bull and JB is making the most of a dominant car by driving it around within it's limits. Pete
I went back to see what I posted at the time: I'm happy to see Button succeeding this season. I still agree with my earlier comments. And assuming Button continues on to win the title, that won't make him a legend, it will make him a Champion. If he wins three titles in a row, that would be a legendary bookend to his career.
I would assume this is what he meant... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
