Max: Go start your own series
    Thursday 4th June 2009 - PlanetF1.com

Max Mosley has told the nine FOTA members to go start their own racing series after they submitted a conditional entry for next year's Championship.

On Friday the FOTA members, all the current teams barring Williams, put forward a block entry for the 2010 Championship, however, they out two main conditions.

The first is that the 2010 season takes place under this year's regulations, and that means no budget cap. Mosley, though, has told them that if they aren't happy with his rules they can go race elsewhere.

"I say to them: If you want to draw up your own rules, then you can organise your own Championship. But we have the Formula 1 Championship." he told Motorsport Aktuel.

"We draw up the rules for that. We have been doing that for 60 years and we will continue doing so."

The second condition set out by FOTA was for a new Concorde Agreement to be signed and sealed by no later than June 12th. But Mosley says that's impossible.

"A Concorde Agreement which one receives so late can't be signed by June 12," the 69-year-old added. "We now have a conflict and we will see who succeeds in the end."

IIRC, the FOTA said that it will collaborate “proactively and productively with the FIA” with a view to establishing a solid foundation on which the future of a healthy and successful F1 in the future.

    Max's reply:
This is really a sad and pathetic state of affairs, what more needs to be said, he really has lost the plot, how can anyone deal with such an attitude or maybe it's his intention is to destory F1.

    I'am past caring now.

"Go elsewhere" - F1 teams can and should. Its time for F1 to completely change and move beyond this type of governance from the FIA. Its over-due. I guess the money required and the fortitude to do so need to be assessed.

The thing is this Dave, Max is saying he is trying to protect F1 from teams leaving, Well IMO, Max is a much bigger threat to Formula One at this specific moment in time, than the spending of Ferrari, Toyota, McLaren and Renault combined.

I have said it from day one the ego of this man it's pathetic, my way or the highway attitude, it's so wrong, We have endured battles of wit and pride between him and Ron Dennis, it was damaging to the sport. Blatant rule bending in Ferrari's favour, hell is this right!! RD had no choice but to leave in the end, he wanted to protect his team, from another year of it.

I hope Bernie realizes that with his attitude in this climate he is in real danger of losing the lot, I don't think it will go that far, but one thing is clear in my mind, Porno Max must know that he is the one bringing the sport down, he is the mouth piece behind every problem in F1. Changing the results after races fining teams 100 mil letting others off for the same thing, it's endless.

The teams need not form another series, they only need to remove Mosley and regain control, and try to restore some crediabilty back to the sport.

And no one is saying the FOTA is trying to make it difficult for new teams to enter the sport, but on the same count they all need to work together on that issue, not one that is being enforced on them.

On the other thread that Mike started about this mess..I posted and did some others this am about this latest repetitive repute of FOTA demands.

Max says rules are rules and he will not concede so go make your new team. How's this going to make LDM and the others look when then come "crawling back" to the Mosley dictatorship - not good at all...all hot air with no results. Bernie has been very much out of the picture of late, is he perhaps pro FOTA and just waiting to see what happens and could realize this is his time to shine and actually become a friend of FOTA and a new series? that could prove to be a beneficial relationship.

Yet another team today enters the foray for F1 - N. Technology, a former WTCC outfit. Could Max be phoning up potential entries to show FOTA that there are plenty out there that can take their place. I really can't see a team that went into liquidation in January of this year when a takeover agreement with Campos Racing fell through really making it in F1.

At this point, I'd welcome the breakaway....will it really occur? right now, anyone's guess - only the minds of the FOTA members can answer that for us. I think it will be interesting to hear what comments are solicited by the various tv commentators during the F1 race this weekend. I can predict that Varsha and Windsor will be making a big production about all this on Speed.....I really think it would behove Windsor not to get caught up in this with Varsha.

Obviously, it goes without saying that a week from tomorrow will be a most interesting day.

I wonder how many teams still have got contracts till 2012 with the FOM, and not fogetting there obligation to there sponsers contracts.
That maybe the problem, with a breakaway and Max knows it, he will have something up his sleeve, he wouldn't make a stupid statement like that otherwise would he.

Breakaway and call it F1, or replace the head snake of the FIA.

Good post Steve. There are plenty of circuits out there available to hold races, including venues in North America which is the largest market for some of these manufacturers. Not saying I want to see an alternative series but if Max and his ego can't be kept in check then FOTA needs to do what it deems best....I do think that FIA is losing the plot with kers, rev limited engines etc. Zero technical freedom from a mechanical viewpoint. If my engine can rev to 21K and last x amount of races and my competitor's engine can't, then f them. This is how MB motors became reliable-rev limits.... As for the cap 40 mil euros is a joke. Bottomline is that you can't do business with an egomaniac as history has shown time and time again. Again, I can see why a current manufacturer would want to bow out if Max doesn't compromise.

Too bad those hos' didn't hit him harder...

what prevents the FOTA teams from parking their cars in the pits the rest of the season? like they did in Indy a few years back. after all Brawn has the championship wrapped up, and I dont think they can be fined for it either. sponsors will pull out fast, ticket sales would come to a halt, and a stern message will be sent to Moseley.

    +1

However, outside of the US, where the FIA doesn't seem to have much "clout", most of these circuits depend upon other FIA sanctioned events for their survival and/or to subsidize the other series. Should any of them choose to host a "breakaway" race you can bet they'd lose their FIA "operators license" and would incur the full wrath of Mad Max - Something that would scare the hell out of 'em. [I know it would me! ;)]

I'm starting to agree with Steve - **** 'em all! Let the whole house of cards come crashing down and see what comes out the other side. CVC apparently needs UK Pounds two million per week to service its debt - **** 'em - What has CVC ever put into F1?

Let's assume for a moment the FOTA guys do indeed stick together and Mad Max doesn't compromise - "F1" next year would be made up of no-names and no-hopers (a team from the WTCC! WTF?). The stands will be empty, very few will even bother to tune in and CVC will go tits up. FOTA sits it out and it would be the evil pygmy who needs to compromise - Something he's very, very good at doing - To get the "real" teams back into the fold.

    My 02c, cheers,
    Ian

I don't believe FOTA members will be sitting out next season. There is enough evidence that they are preparing for an alternative league. If not, they have been playing one big bluff, and I don't think that is what is happening. I have to wonder if Bernie didn't trademark the Rome GP to try to keep FOTA from grabbing it. Bernie's abandonment of traditional venues could work against him next season. Anyone for "Formula Real Grand Prix Racing" at Magny Cours next year?

FWIW, CVC has 52 companies with sales of 88,000,000,000 Euro, so I'd be surprised if they would fail if current F1 entrants went elsewhere.

Why put so much (if any) credence in what Max says?
IMO he sees that he's being marginalized by FOTA. Bernie either by his silence of late or by unpublicized discussions he's having with FOTA has left him out to dry as well.
These strike me as the last gasps of a drowning man.

IMO what Max is dealing with is similar to spoiled kids. If a brat is threatening to do whatever in some instances you call him/her on it. I think that's what he's doing here and it will probably work in the end. The FIA really needs to maintain absolute control here or things will be even more of a circus.

Formula 1's current teams remain wholly committed to finding a solution to their dispute with the FIA over the future of the sport, despite suggestions from Max Mosley that they should go off and do their own series.

With no solution yet in sight in the row over a £40 million budget cap for next year, the nine members of the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) are awaiting a response from the FIA about the conditions they laid down for them to enter next year's championship.

They want a Concorde Agreement signed by next week, plus the current plans for 2010 regulation changes to be abandoned, in favour of their own proposals. The FIA is due to reveal the 2010 entrants on June 12.

Although the teams have not yet had an official response from the FIA about the conditions of their entry, Mosley suggested in an interview with Motorsport Aktuell that if FOTA was unhappy with the proposed rules it should form a breakaway championship.

BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen made it clear in Turkey on Thursday, however, that FOTA was far more interested in reaching a deal with the FIA than going off and doing its own series.

"We are now really committed to find a solution with the FIA to go forward together," he explained. "That is all I want to say at this point of time."

Theissen said that FOTA did not have any plans to meet this weekend to discuss the situation, although it would do so if the FIA responded.

"We would be ready to sit down immediately," he explained.

Although there have been some causes for optimism in the past week that the teams and the FIA were heading for a solution, Theissen was more cautious about the chances of the matter getting sorted by next week.

"I said after the meeting in Monaco that the situation is difficult, it is critical and it is not solved yet, and the same applies today," he said.

Theissen also revealed that the decision by FOTA to lodge conditional entries was suggested to them by Mosley.

"When we had the meeting with Max [Mosley] in Monaco, it was his idea to put in a conditional entry," he said.

Two of the more interesting point of Theissen's interview:

Trouble is one thing Mosley is not and thats a quitter, otherwise he would have crawled under a rock and disappeared after his sex exploits were exposed, like any decent person would.

You only have to look at whats happening in the UK now with the MP's in goverment there holding there hands up and quitting.

The way this is going I fear it's heading over the cliff, he is one silly stubbon egotistic dictating moron.

Yes, but you can not assume from the peanut gallery who is the poor opponent.

Never underestimate your adversary in serious negotiations, especially their strength and their hidden allies. Especially, you do not involve your personal opinion of their personal behaviour. In my own experience, I have actually intentionally backed off before my final offer, letting those with whom I am negotiating think they have the upper hand. This allowed me to observe what their true limits were, and then formulate a response accordingly. I have no problem letting my opponent think they won the game, as long as I get what I wanted. Even in chess, you some times give up some of your players, to get to the ultimate goal.

In this game of chess, this move by Mosley was predictable, and very likely expected by FOTA. If I were him, I would have said the same thing, its a game. Like Thiessen stated after Mosley's statement, a solution with the FIA is STILL their primary goal. It's apparent, that Mosley still holds significant power, if not, even Theissen would have been more aggressive with his response.

I do not see any reason to underestimate Mosley's strength, yet. I do see reason to see FOTA's "unity" not what it appears. You already know that two (plus Williams) of the FOTA teams want budget caps. I do see Bernie using Mosley as his tool, waiting on the sidelines, and then coming in to save the show.

A show that will include some form of budget caps. Unless some genius can come up with a way to truly bring new teams into F1 without budget caps. Maybe Ross Brawn will save the day in this respect.
