Went to an Italian Car show here in Scotland a few weeks back and was surprised to see another 7 or 8 cars all identical to mine. Never realised that there were that many 328 in this part of the world !

I'm a sucker for individualism so I decided at that point that I needed to do something with the car to make it stand out in the crowd, even if it meant that it would no longer be "stock" and it probably wouldn't appeal to the purists who think that these cars are to rare to be messed about with ?

Nothing too radical, just a nice set of 18" Speedline split rims and a paint job on the roof.

Well pleased with the end result !

I'd love to upgrade my wheels as well. That looks great, for real! What modifications were necessary to fit those? I have a Euro also. Thanks in advance.

Lots of red 328s at Ferrari events in California, so I know what you mean. My honest opinion (although you probably didn't want it):

Overall I think 16" wheels suit the proportions of the car better. There's not enough fender above the wheel wells on 308/328s to balance the larger wheels. The 246 and Boxer would have the same problem with 18-inchers. They are low, small cars, and were designed with the wheel sizes of the era in mind.

I agree with you about not being concerned about "ruining a rare car", because it can always be put back (if you saved the original targa top -- those are expensive). But I'm biased -- I think the OEM wheels are one of the great iconic styling touches of Ferrari (similar to the Fuchs forged alloys on the old 911s).

That said, looks like a very clean 328.

Bullfighter please join us in the new millenium, 18s look soooo much. The factory wheels are so dated. Larger wheels improves the car in so many ways

AWESOME LOOK Franco.. you go boy

These wheels went straight on the car without any mods (no spacers required) although I did have to fit shorter wheelbolts to the rear as the standard ones foul the handbrake shoes.

The offset on these wheels is ET14 and I've fitted 255 35 18's to the rear and 225 40 18's to the front. I was expecting the steering to feel even heavier but if anything it' feels sliightly lighter and parking speeds which seems strange. I also checked the size of the 18" tyres against the original fitments using one of these online tyre conversion data sites and the rolling radius of both front and rear are almost identical so it won't affect the gearing or the speedo accuracy either.

Only driven it in the dry so far and the car feels well planted with no adverse effect on the handling.

Bullfighter .... I also share you viewpoint that the standard wheels on 328's are just about perfect and had my car been any other colour than red, I wouldn't have changed them. In my quest to give the car a more individual look changing the wheels and painting the roof is about the only thing that I could do although a bare metal respray in Blu Chiaro would have been an even better option ....... my favourite 328 colour by far !

Yeah, yeah. Would've responded sooner but there's a Beverly Hills 90210 original marathon on Soap.

Blu chiaro is a great color. One I drove a few years back:

It took me around 3-4 hours to sand the leather grain effect off the roof and prep it for painting. If you break through the gelcoat while sanding then you'll need to use a sealer under the primer otherwise it will react with the fibreglass. I then applied a couple of coats of high build primer followed by 3 coats of 2K acrylic. Looks just like a metal panel now .....totally smooth and very shinny !

Time consuming but well worth the effort in my opinion.

But keep in mind that the sidewalls are a significant part of the ride. Going to 18 inch rims is going to give you crisper turn-in for the track, but it will also shake your fillings harder on real world pavement.

Keep track of your total rim+wheel weight, too. Your tires give you no usable grip if they're bouncing off the surface.

I find the handling of the 328 on 16 inch wheels to be good enough that I don't really want to mess with it.

Has anyone put a 328 on a set of 28 inch rims yet?

    Very nice wheels!

I also love the stock 16 inch wheels - they just seem to look right. I put 16s on my 308 and the ride was noticeably harder - don't think I could handle 18s!

I'm with Bullfighter on this. I don't think 18's look good on 3X8's. 17's look OK but the 16's seem just right. I had 17's and fatter tires for a while. There may have been a little more ultimate grip but the wheel/tire combo was heavier and I could feel more bouncing. After 1000 miles or so, I went back to the stock setup. I think it just drives better with the stock size.

I do like the painted roof. The mono color really helps with the lines of the car. But what would you expect a GTB owner to say?

As a purist, I will pass on the wheels, but I (choke, gasp, cough) actually like the look with the painted roof on a red 328. I have a black roof on my 348 though and plan on keeping it that way.

Do what you want on the wheels. They are tasteful, but I think the stock one's look good on the 328, better than even the stock rims on the 348 which I like, because the guys in Italy actually put those on the car :p - but at least you chose tastefully.

Don Juanito (or whatever he is calling himself now) reallly wants you to put 21's on the car, and will start a fund for you if you want kerb feelers and neon lights under frame on both sides so when you get your car on this show you don't feel out of place.

For me..... I have never seen any wheel that suits the 328 like the O.E.M. wheel. Not even close. Having said that, I think a 17-inch version of the original wheels and with a brighter silver finish would be a very tasteful "update" (along with appropriate decrease in tire profile). Definitely like the look with the red roof :) Looks like it was very well done.

I also prefer the oem wheels, but the Speedlines look good, as does the body color roof. Now all you need to do is put the steering wheel on the correct side of the cockpit.....

The 18's accentuate the stock wheel gap. A 1.5" drop would throw things right back into proportion. I think the Speedlines look nice and don't look TOO modern.

That said, 17's seem like they'd give a really nice "larger wheel" look to these cars.

I like the whole look. I've often thought of having my top painted too, but my car has rust and a modded motor so it would never be a pure stock restoration candidate. I also like the painted roof spoiler- also updates the car nicely!!!!!

Franco - saw your car at Knockhill earlier this year and you got what you wanted, it makes the difference that gets you noticed. I did anyway. Nice job.
