    Hello,

I am new here, and i dont know many things about Ferraris...

I just have some few questions about this particular car, which is a kind of pieces of history for many reasons !

The car was bodied by Drogo, ran Le Mans in 1966 with a long tail, and was nicknamed White Elephant. Masten Gregory and Bob Bondurant retired in the 9th hour.

In 1967, the car was driven by Ricardo Rodriguez (not of Rodriguez family) and Parsons. Here is the picture :

As you see, there is a white elephant stickers on it ! I think it was a kind of joke made by Luigi Chinetti. Who knows about that ?

It seems that it is the first car to ran at Le Mans with a rear wing of that kind (i have to check that, but i am pretty sure ! Chapparral had another kind of wings.

And you also can notice a Goodyear sticker on the fender ! that's make this car an outlaw !!! just because in 1967, the CSI did not allow, in european race, to wear a sponsor ! Ford had the Autolite logo, without Autolite, Matra had the ELF Logo, without ELF, Chapparral had the Firestone logo, without Firestone, and some others had BP, Shell or Marchal logo but without the brand name !

    Amazing car !

The vertical wings are not unlike the Factory Ford GT's wings from Lemans 1965. NART only used the vertical wings in 1967 during the race. They tested
the vertical wings in 1966 only. The car does have a big trunk and its white.
I can't remember if there is a story behind the name.

Karel, I have the Road & Track, February 1968, which is noted on the Barchetta site as a reference to 0838 after the last rebody by Drogo. It has 4 black & white pictures of the car, but the photos are by Pete Coltrin, and apparently the copyright holders are unhappy about seeing them posted on the internet. If you send me a PM with your email address, I'll scan and send the pictures to you. This is NOT the "White Elephant" version of 0838.

Coltrin's work was recently published, IIRC....may be one reason. Still any press is good press! LOL!

    Hi,

I know that you're the best team in finding uniques and old race Ferraris, so I have a difficult question for you.

My friend is working to a 1/18 scale model of the NART white elephant, and I'm designing 1967 custom decals for him.

There are two sponsor logos that I can't absolutely recognize. In the image are signed with green arrows:

Looking at other scale cars the yellow circle seems to have a outlined black triangle in its interior:

    Maibe someone has better photos?

    Can you help us, please?

    Thanks
    Alan

Alan I think the upper one is the SEV Marchal logo

    http://dsl.torque.net/images/Marchal950.jpg

And the lowest: I think it is a yellow blob like the #18 has.

My '67 Automobile Year has a photo of Rodriguez attempting to dig the White Elephant out of the sand bank into which he had stuffed it very early in the race. Apparently, the organizers weren't impressed with his efforts, and the car was hauled off with some 22 hours to go.

Wikipedia definition for the "white elephant" idiom:

"A white elephant is an idiom for a valuable possession of which its owner cannot dispose and whose cost (particularly cost of upkeep) is out of proportion to its usefulness or worth."

    Thanks Peperbus,

maibe my image isn't so good, but there is another logo just on the top of the Marchal logo. In some scale models I saw it's a Shell logo.

Do you mean the signify of the yellow blob? in 1/43 Tecnomodel car it's ayellow ACO logo.

Thanks guys for all the interest you pose in this topic, besides it was jut "a bit" older

Usually at LM a yellow blob means an alu body (for security purpose, is a sign for the fire men).
    May be is this?

Hi, not sure if this is correct, but I have been told that and Elephant is a sign of luck, my Lancia Integrale has an Elephant logo. maybe some Italian race car lucky pants thing.

This is from a Lancia History website:
There are contrasting stories and legends regarding the origin of this elephant, including the simple "the elephant never forgets". We do know that in 1953 the then Managing Director of Lancia, Gianni Lancia, chose it as a good luck token for the Company's first racing appearances. The symbol of the galloping elephant apparently originates in Eastern mythology as an auspicious emblem or symbol of victory, providing the trunk is stretched forward. This is how the elephant chosen by Gianni Lancia was drawn, first in light blue and later as now in bright red.

I used to have a Fulvia HF Fanalone prototype that raced at Daytona and Sebring. It was the 2nd of two built and the last true works team Lancia before FIAT took over. At the time I corresponded with one of the mechanics who prepped the car in Italy prior to it being shipped to the States. I asked him why the "Elephant" was used as a symbol. He was probably making a joke but said that years earlier when Lancia was looking for a mascot all the cool animals had already been taken.
