Hey guys, I have a question I am hoping somebody can answer for me. Forgive me if it is an ignorant question. I recently really got into photography. I purchased a Canon Powershot G10 back in January. It takes wonderful photos and is built like a tank, very small and sturdy. Anyways, I also recently got into editing my pictures. I have been using Corel Painter 9, which seems to be a decent program. A buddy of mine sent me an email saying that I should think about getting iPhoto. He then took a photo of a Ford GT I had on my Flickr, and dropped it into iPhoto. I am extremely impressed! The shot looks gorgeous and the colors are amazing. So it now brings me to my first dumb question. Is iPhoto only for Mac's? I have a PC. I assume anything with "i" in it is Mac. Is there any other really good programs for PC that I can use? Or am I just doing something wrong with Corel Painter 9? Any help is greatly appreciated, Chris The first picture is off of iPhoto. The second is off of Corel Painter 9. The same things were done to each. I dont know if its just me, but I see a huge difference. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
see if you can get a copy of Photoshop. All else pales in comparison I'm not that impressed with the said iphoto editing tool your friend used. It is nice that it toned down the high reflections tone; but not "that nice" that it changes the whole thing IMO.
Thanks Isaac. I was hoping I would get a reply from you. I would love to get a hold of PhotoShop, but what would the cost be? Isnt it a couple hundred dollars? I cant understand why the reflections are so high on Corel Painter. Is there a setting I could bump down to eliminate this? The only thing I do to my photos and is crop if needed, and auto-adjust the colors. Once agian, thanks for the help. Any more is greatly appreciated. Chris
Looks like the second photo (Corel?) has the blacks, brightness and saturation jacked up. If those aren't options in the editor, maybe Corel is set up for higher contrast photos by default.
I'm really not sure Marc. I just hit "Auto-Adjust" and sets that by default. I'll continue to play around with it. Thanks again, Chris
While Painter is a good program for natural media painting, it isn't meant to be a photo editing program. I'm not familiar with iPhoto so I can't comment on its usefulness, however, Photoshop is the industry standard for editing and manipulating digital photos, It is not inexpensive but it is the best!
If you are just starting out get Photoshop Elements 7. $69 on sale. It is extensive and the full blown Photoshop CS4 is realy for those with some background working with it.
Thanks for the information guys. I will look into PhotoShop. My main concern is just getting the colors spot-on. Chris
If you decide to stick with Corel, their Photo-Paint (found in Corel Graphics Suite) is more suitable for editing photos. You can download a trial version for free at corel.com.
Is that what you meant by "the same things were done to each"? One program's auto differs from another's, somtimes quite significantly (as is evident here).
