I heard in a McQueen bio that it represented the bow fingers, which were often cut off the captured prisoners of the French, McQueen waved them to the victor, that he was still capable of fighting.... as in "see you another day, well done...."

very cool, makes sense also !

"pluck ewe" was the expression used i think in referring to the archers taunt. later it evolved to just the middle finger ! :)

again, sorry for the off topic rambling, but it seems the gesture was used amongst the racers.

In answer to Hubert1's question about the wire hanging out of the nose of the Ferrari 330 P4, the photo is of a highly secret premature venture by Ferrari into an electric powered race car. Evidentially, the experiment was abandoned before it became publicly known. I'm joking of course.

It's Von Trips/Gendebien 246SP (0790) in the 1961 Targa Florio, on its way to victory.

    Great, thanks!
So next time someone asks, I can say more than "it's a Ferrari".
The driver in the picture is Von Trips? or Gendebien?

It's Von Trips. I have the same poster framed in the hall. Mechanics Adelmo Marchetti and Ener Vecchi are working on the car. Willy Mairesse is watching with hands in leather jack. Mind the flying sponge.

    Bedankt Arjan!
Haha, yes I have wondered about the "hovering" sponge. Looks like it was thrown by the mechanic with the white cap, but where is it going?

    Hello to all,

I'm looking for a picture or information about the color of 500 Mondial 0424MD, in Tour de france 1954, race number #234.

    Thanks,
    Ricardo

What a coincidence. I just bought a Paulo Tron model of the 159/166 run by Franco Cortese and Adelmo Marchetti in the 1948 Mille Miglia.

Great photo of the 312B2 Ed! Keep'em coming please! With all the discussion on another thread speculating about Ferrari's possible return to Le Mans, how about some more photos of Ferrari at Le Mans past?

He says that he followed his father who was mechanic at Ferrari and that it was close to factory pilots like Ickx or Posey...
