Thought this might be interesting....
Another meaningless deadline will come and go. The ridiculous battle will continue. The only really meaningful deadline is the first race next year. Remember December 2008? Honda announced their withdrawal. Nobody knew what would happen. A month later a new team is born and got entry to F1. As for the whole ridiculous war, I said it before and I say it again: - there will be no break away series - most of the FOTA teams will be at the start of the first GP in 2010 - the rest will be filled with the new kids on the block bringing the total to 26 Whether Mad Max, Bernie, LdM and Briatore will politically survive this I can't say and I don't care that much. But F1 will survive this and remain king on the hill of motorsports.
Interesting. I don't think the battle is ridiculous though... I think the teams are absolutely right in their steadfast opposition to Max and FIA bullying. It's ridiculous on Max's side, though, I agree. I think a breakaway series would only happen if both sides play hardball, and Max survives re-election. I think the chance of that happenning is probably about 2%. I think the FOTA have no real deadline, it's an imagined one created by Max, because he has his own deadline. He wants to sew this up, then run for re-election as the man who saw F1 through this crisis. The teams *really* don't want that. I think the deadline will be extended under some through justification, likely the FIA saying that they are almost at an arrangement and will hold off for another week or two. Only when FOTA lays down the law, if they do, and says "that WAS our final offer" will Max go so far as to try to exclude them. If the 8 FOTA teams are excluded, I don't know that the FIA could even come up with a 10-team grid next year. I would also not be surprised if the FOTA teams pulled off a coup and announced their own series and got some of the new teams to join them instead (like Lola, Prodrive, etc). It still would almost certainly not lead to a breakaway, but would add immense pressure for Max to get ousted, and make way for a reconciliatory new leader. I think Bernie's position is pretty much solidified. If a new series was announced, I'd be surprised if he wasn't very much involved, playing both sides of the fence. If a new series is announced, there is a 95% chance it would be re-consolidated with F1 before the '10 season ever starts. Max is screwed... if the teams stick together.
They will all kiss and make up and everything will be hunkey-dorey - business as usual (for whatever usual is for these entertainers) .....meanwhile just lots of hot air, enough to fly around the world many times. Carol I'd really like to see them to tell Max/Bernie to shove it but realistically.....not gonna happen. Where's Ney???? we need the latest from Maroonyellow!!!
I read this on a blog: The scenario now being discussed is one in which FOTA sticks together. The Monaco GP goes with them and then Bernie Ecclestone follows the money which is probably the only way that CVC can get their debt repayments made (and that will involve much refinancing). The FIA would then be left in a bit of a state without much of a series beyond Williams and Force India. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm not really sure, I think we are into new terrority here. Looking at it with just the basic facts, Max has set out to increase the grid and bring cost down and is doing the complete opposite. I believe now the real purpose of this battle is to get Max's strangle hold off F1, every man and his dog has had enough. A good part of me agrees with Andreas and Carol, however I don't believe it's a ridiculous battle without purpose, the way it is being fought out maybe ridiculous, with letters flying back and to, but something has got to give and that's where Bernie steps in methinks. A fact from a Mosley, he wants the teams to sign ok, he dresses up his statements in varying degrees in a seemingly compromised tone, yet the real deal governance! he skirts the issue. Only to say he will discuss that when they have signed ...Bollox!!.. A commitment to talk about change, is not after all a commitment to change, and trust him noway!!
It is a battle over egos, control and money at this time. It is no longer about the sport. But unless Max doesn't get reelected (which could happen, although unlikely), he will win this battle: He can call the bluff of the FOTA with their break-away series. He could even let them try for next year and watch them fail. Eventually they'll come back. FIA is the IRL in this game. FOTA are the Champ cars. And we know how that ended.
Maybe but ..Auto sport The Formula One Teams' Association announced on Thursday night that it is setting up a breakaway championship. Following a four hour meeting at Renault's Enstone factory, the eight members of FOTA said it had grown frustrated with the FIA's stance against it and that it had no option but to create its own championship. "The teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 World Championship," said a statement. "These teams therefore have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new Championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners. This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders. "The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series." More to follow. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76292
Been there, watched it. In 1982. Lasted a few races then it all collapsed. Been there, read a lot about it. A few years back, when it was the GPMA. Didn't even get a race together then it collapsed. It is a lot easier to release a joint press communique than to actually do something. Something tangible like a book of rules and regulations or a list of tracks for 2010.
I agree, but it certainly appears they mean business, who knows the answer, IMO I do not feel they need to break away but just refuse to race with Max as head of the FIA..
Case of Stella Artois say Max doesn't win this one.... you got me covered? I'm feelin' lucky this time!
Just read Mark Webber gave a two fingered salute to the FIA.. The Aussie put two fingers up at the FIA by stating that if Fota were start its own series, it would be the most prestigious been as it will have the best drivers and the best equipment. Seems the driver are right behind it.
Define "Max doesn't win" and we might have a deal. BTW: I'm already betting a case of beers over Rubens vs Vettel.
I think what Max wants is to retain his control over F1 and be re-elected for 4 more years at the FIA. I think what FOTA wants is to have a governance process whereby they are not subject to the whims of Max. Meaning no more penalties pulled out of thin air, no more reversing decisions and claiming the people that made them had no authority to, no more implementing kooky rules, no more deception (like holding a meeting on McLaren's penalty and pushing through '10 rules), etc. So... Max winning would be him retaining control of the FIA (i.e. not getting booted out, forced to resign, or having to leave after this term without his tail between his legs). Max winning could also be the FOTA teams coming back into the FIA without their governance requirement being met (i.e. not having the authority to put a halt to the whims of the FIA in the rule making process) and Max still being able to dictate rules that the teams are forced to comply with. FOTA winning would be either Max being ousted (either by resigning before his term is up, or being in an untenable position and not being able to run for re-election), and FOTA winning would also include returning back into the FIA fold, but having their governance requirement met - such that the FIA/Max can no longer just implement kooky rules on a whim. Is that defined enough? If not, let me know your definition of FOTA winning and I'm sure we can find common ground. err, or should I say "let me know your final offer, then I will make a counteroffer to your final offer, and you can counteroffer back"
Isn't the FIA election a ways off? (post season) If so nobody's going to wait to see the outcome before they act on a new series.
I don't think we will see either side win or loose anytime soon. The morons from FOTA are convinced they can pull off the pirate series and might even be stupid enough to try it. That'll last a few races if at all. At that point they'll come back on their knees begging for entrance into F1, which will be already in full swing with no names teams. Meanwhile Ferrari is bleeding to death because they signed binding contracts with all parties. Somebody will make them pay. So what is a Max' victory? I'd say if the guy is still in charge of the FIA by this time (June, halfway point of the 2010 season). He'll be running either a normal F1 series (with the FOTA fools looking just like that) or one with no names teams and drivers. Either way, Max will be in charge of F1. That's my conditio sine qua non. Accept?
Well thank you. I was the lone wolf (along with JKnight and TifosiRon) who went against the stream and said that there will be no split. Granted I had my moments of doubt too when bombastic Briatore blarred out that the Wednesday WMSC meeting is irrelevant and FOTA will go ahead with the pirate series anyway. Maybe the FChat honesty police should first write Briatore a big ticket. PS: Mike, that case of Stella Artois is delicious.
