Enzo's obituary

I saved this from the obituary section from the local paper years ago & had forgotten all about until this weekend, it was found in one my old Ferrari books that was in storage so I took the liberty of scanning it. Anyway, just wanted to share with the group.

I thought he died in Feb. That date is in August. I thought I looked it up on the internet and that's when it was. I did enjoy the article. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for reminding us about Enzo Ferrari. His death 21 years ago, is a long time. Many of us were kids, teenagers, when he left us, and many of us were also kids, during his glory years, for his racecars and also his infamous antics. The Scuderia and Luca, are still at it, if current events are considered. Enzo still lives!

I will never forget the 1988 Italian GP where Berger led a Ferrari 1-2 just weeks after Enzo passed away...Senna was only 2 laps from victory when a backmarker took him out (Schlesser). The Italian GP was the ONLY GP that McLaren did not win in 1988.

...to this day I believe that Enzo was smiling somewhere... I remain convinced that the Ferrari 1-2 result that happened in Italy of all places was something that was meant to be... there can be no other explanation of why McLaren didn't win that race as they did all the others that year!

Enzo was a great man. As with all great men both his good points as well as his faults were magnified way beyond those of other mortal men...

Story is when Senna died and went to heaven, he asked God about Schlesser, who was in the only GP he had participated in, and asked why He allowed him to cause the incident. God looked over his shoulder and said, Enzo?

The obit quotes his autobiography, is that 'my terrible joys?'

I believe I recall reading some bit a few years back that he insisted on a delay in his death announcement due to the delay in his birth recording... below is something I grabbed off wiki:



Enzo Ferrari died on August 14, 1988 in Modena at the age of 90. His death wasn't made public until two days later, as by Enzo's request, to compensate late registration of his birth. It has been claimed that Enzo Ferrari's actual date of birth is 18 February 1898 but it was recorded as having occurred on 20 February because his father was unable to register the birth until then, due to bad weather

Greg, IMO his main problem was with the Vatican, although I am sure he recalled the loss of his 'only' son Dino with bitterness.

You cannot chose fate however, and the article does mention repaired relations with The Church, towards the end..

I remember watching that race on TV. It was truly awesome. The tifosi went absolutely mental.

Fascinating quote and totally unlike my impression based on previous information.

 

I think in reality he was a religous person. At the end he did confession and took communion and died as a Catholic. I think the religous aspects were because of the 1950's and deaths of drivers and his son. If you read his autobiography he talks a little bit about religion.

 

I love how it said the Pope toured the factory, drove a car, but only spoke to the Bed-ridden Enzo by phone for five minutes...

To clarify my statement, those that believe in the afterlife, in heaven, with God, hope to see loved ones, and who knows who else, up there.... I guess in a silly way, I thought about who I may encounter in heaven, and Enzo was at the top of my list... As far as I know, agnostics don't make it in...

Such a gentleman. He is so proud of his engines that I heard one of his quotes were:
