How could you guys compare a range finder with a single lens reflex? Its totally different.... Leica is a rangefinder camera. A rangefinder is famous for documentary because it doesn't have a mirror up. Not like SLRs, which makes that clicking noise. The most amazing shots during the war era were taken with lecia. They are famous for their silent shutter, leica uses a cloth focal plane, while the canon and nikon has probably some carbon fiber ones... also small and light weight design, which means less attention to public notice. They also make very good lenses, because they are mainly prime lenses which construction does not require large amount of lens elements like slr zoom lenses which are large. The downside about the leica is that, since it doesn't have a mirror up, the viewfinder doesn't really display the real image during close ups. So it isn't ideal for food photography, close up portraits, flowers and marco. There will be a parallax error between the lens and viewfinder. The upside about buying a D700 over a 5DMKII is that D700 could operate better in low light conditions, this is because of the pixel density, the gathering of light in one pixel. So the D700 has less pixels because it is only 12mps, so there is more light to feed into one pixels out of all; but the 5DMKII has 21mps, which is why the pixels are pretty cramped up, there is probably twice the pixels of one compared to the D700, so which means 2 pixels has to share one light which theoretically means a result in more noises because they have to share the same light and fight for it. They are the same because both cameras shares the same sensor design, a full frame 35mm digi technology. This is like the D3 vs the D3x, 12 vs 24. Which so much so, documentary photographers still prefer the D3. Which the D3x has probably 3 times the noise on high ISOs.... Also, the downside if you get a 5DMKII is that you will need a much faster computer to operate because of the file sizes. And bigger hard drives if you shoot a lot. If you're shoot for web purposes and so on, i'd ask you to go for the D700. I hope you will all find this useful! Regards Lim
Lim, I agree with u except that a commercially available SLR was not developed during the pre-50s & well, we don't have that many brands then. We do see SLRed photos from Vietnam onwards don't we. Anyway, that Leica has been very much kept alive because of die-hard fans & their R series never did as well. That said, they were supposed to be very well built. Legend has it that one was dropped accidentally from a flying aircraft & it survived! Anyway, if we were to compare them to cars, it's probably a Porsche Btw, did they do more than one of that concept Beemer?

Quite cheap, a little more than a grand I believe. They have a set of spare Kelleners exhaust for it but mama mia, it sounds like a monster lawn mower! As for the Lamb, what a screw-up! I spent all the effort to get it back to stock then went for inspection only to realise it's not due for another 6 months! Aiyah..... anyway, I also claimed a new windscreen for it since it's got a problem & FOC. Finally, after 2 years of looking through pot-marked glass, I'm having a new glass.
