Just got off the phone with a broker I know and he told me he is getting more and more calls for 308's then ever before. The buyers are not looking for 328's though, very specifically looking for the 308's. Wonder why? Age? Some of the callers are yankies calling up here in the great white north.

Could be the price drops of late are making them more attractive to buyers who
were previously hesitant. 328s don't seem to have sunk as much as 308 it seems.

Hard to say.....a lot of winos drift in off South Congress, to compliment my "investment"....lends a high tone air, to the neighborhood!

The 308 has racing history and is eligible for many historic events. The 328 hasn't and isn't.

Not so much in the States. Historic events tend to cut off prior to 1975 here, and the 308/328 were road cars only.

Part of it is likely that 308s are cheaper, and the economy is weak.

Back in the early.mid 1990s, after the last Ferrari investment crash, a couple more astute observers at a couple car rags predicted that the carburetted .308's would become more collectible in the future than the injected 308s or 328s, due to carbs being easier to work on and possible parts availability issues.

No emission testing on 308s in many places; 328s are still tested in many places

308 has more classic lines than the 328. Not -better-, but more classic.

IMHO - the most beautiful car out of Maranello is the Dino 246. The closest to that is the 308. Again IMHO! They are all special, and all beautiful. It's Kind of like selecting a Miss Universe. When you see a Ferrari on the road, it is always a special sighting. The 308, and 246 for whatever reason keeps me fixated on the beauty of the oh-soooo-sensuous shape, over and above the cache of it being a Ferrari.

Many folks have already touched on it here, but perhaps I can provide my own perspective. This is more than likely the perspective of the typical individual that is driving up the demand of 308's currently (I am looking for a 308 myself). The perspective of someone that has been a fan of cars their whole life, have probably owned many other makes and models of sports/classic cars, but have probably never owned a Ferrari before. First, plain and simple, these cars are affordable right now. Second, it's age is getting to the point where it could be deemed a classic automobile. Let me divulge into this point more deeply. As most know the collectability of a vehicle is direct function of the age of the fans of these cars. I am 31 years old. When I was young one of the most iconic cars of my youth was the 308. This is the case with a large proportion of my generation. Right now is the time when this generation is starting to come to an age of maturity in a financial sense. Basically the stars are aligning at this point in time for the 308. Also (no offense is meant here to anyone on this board) but owning and driving around a classic car, like a 308, is much different endeavor than driving around a newer model Ferrari. If I see two people driving down the street and one is driving a 308 and the other is driving a 430 I would say to myself that the driver of the 308 has great taste in cars, but I would say that the owner of the 430 is just some rich dude that wants everyone to know that he can afford a Ferrari. In my book, and again I come from a background where I am a fan of all sports cars not just Ferrari, the 308 driver has much more 'cred' in the car world in my book.

328 fans don't take this to heart too much right now, but perhaps down the road you should. As someone on this thread has already mentioned the lines of the 328 are not as "classic" as the 308 at this point in time. The fact that the 328 is a more modern version, both aesthetically and mechanically, in my opinion is why that the demand is not a par with the 308 currently. But as I referenced above just give it time and the 328 will soo fall into the "classic" automobile category as well. Now with that being said, and this is just speculation on my part, but I have a feeling that as time passes and as the both the 308 and 328 both become mechanical dinosaurs that the prices of the these two models will even out. It would not also surprise me that in another decade or so if the 308 models will start to demand a premium over the 328 due to the fact that the 308 was the original model and 328 was just a 'built up' 308. There is somewhat of a precedent set in this regard with different makes and models.

excellent post, and i concur. if i had wanted a 328, i would have had one or two by now, not the line of old 308's i have had. i just like the lines on the older GTB's better, than the melted look of the 328.

perhaps the market wull show a small rise, but in this terrible economy, i see sales as "slow". i have had a ton of calls on my QV, but everyone wants to steal it, and i dont have to sell it, its just time for me to get number 6. :)

Curious why prospective buyers would be calling Canada for a 308. Does the exchange rate make a difference? I assume that a Canadian spec car would have to be federalized at very great expense like any European car would, so it wouldn't make sense at 308's values.

Great post! The one comment that makes me twitch a bit is the comment that they are affordable now. The fact is a clapped out one is affordable to buy and look at in your garage, leaks oil and has signs of wear, missing parts, incorrect parts and deferred maintenance but hey, its affordable unless you decide to fix it. Fact is a great one isnt affordable nor is a clapped out one that gets the attention it needs and deserves. MOST 308's for sale are beat down turds with mulitple problems both cosmetic and mechanical which attracts the unsuspecting (and ultimately unprepared) only to continue on neglected after reality sets in due to finances and again continues in a state of disrepair until passed onto the next buyer looking to fulfill his/her dream - the cycle continues. Anyone can buy a 308 tomorrow, glass euro, QV, whatever but odds are you are buying a turd. If you want a perfect one or a restored one you will pay 355 prices +. If you're happy with an old car that functions as such then $30K will get you a 308 that is only a shadow of its former self - ignorance is bliss in this case. Only after you drive a great one will you see the light.

I've gotta say that some of the most respectful and good natured comments and gestures (chuckin' the duece, thumps up etc.) come from kids in tuner/Asian import type cars.

I was suprised just yesterday as two teens pulled up next to me in a slammed acura with a coffee can exhaust and simply nodded their heads and drove on. This has happened a dozen or so times since i've had the car. That and the amount of young boys who stare at my car with deer in the headlights eyes gives me faith in the value of the 308 in the future.

It's just the "30 year" rule coming in to play - 30 years since the exotic car that a teenager fell in love with becomes affordable by that person now that the family is grown up etc... I think this effect will be super-strong for the 308 as it was truly iconic in its day and also from the Magnum effect (groan!).
