Hi all, I'm a new owner of a 86 Testarossa. I have a question that someone here might be able to answer. I noticed a crack in the rear windshield. Has anyone tried the Lexan replacement that's available? I'm leaning this route as it's a 1/3 of the cost of a used glass one. So if you have a Lexan or know someone who does could you share your experiences?

I found a 512TR rear windsheild. Does anyone know if there are any differences between this model and the one in my 86 Testa?

Did you notice it before or after you bought it? Personally, I would live with it as it is before I put in Lexan.

BTW, there is a thread down somewhere on this forum for all the known single mirror cars - it would be a great thing to post yours onto the listing.

dont know about the lexan stuff...

but i owned a 512 TR....and jacked up rear wheel to clean under car...And cracked the rear glass at the bend!!

LESSON learned...DO NOT JACK UP 1 CORNER OF CAR!!! you must jack up both sides at same time. The chasis flexes too much with one corner lifted and BAM!! you will crack rear glass!!

I bought a replacement from Daniel at Ricambi...great guys to work with. Give them a call see what they can do.

as above posted...i would rather leave cracked then replace with something non OEM.

    good luck.

Thanks guys. Is the rear windsheild the same in a 512 as it is in my TR? I have a line on a 512 rear glass local to me.

BTW, I did notice it but didn't know it was so hard and expensive to find replacment glass.

According to the SPCs available at RicambiAmerica, TR, 512TR, and F512M all use the same rear window -- PN 61511000:

    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=227531

When my TR windshield was cracked, I called my insurance company and the clerk said "your deductable is $1000 so I don't think you want to file a claim on this" -- I responded "that will about cover the cost of the trim moulding -- the glass will be more" ;)

Breaking the backlight is very common in TR. It happens just going in driveways diagonally to keep the spoiler from dragging. Mine is broken and I got a really good deal on a new one a year or two ago but I am planning on keeping it as a spare and installing a Lexan piece. It won't break and the car is going to get some miles before we are done with it.

No. Didn't know they existed until I went shopping for the glass piece I have now. Kept thinking about it and figured I'd just let the glass age a while before I use it.

One thing about Ferrari parts, the best investments I have are the ones that fit a Ferrari.

Keep me posted as well, mine went though a pot hole and cracked the driver side corner, The price for a glass is about $2400 plus I would guess a $800 labor to put on.
I am living with that crack right now but one of these days would like to replace it with another glass.

I do not know about other states, but here in Florida, If your WINDSHIELD is cracked, you get it replaced for free, with the expense paid by your insurance company. No deductibles come into play. They pay 100%.

Are you sure that it's really free, or is the cost included in an "increased" premium that is forced on everyone (this is usually the way these gov't scams work ;) -- although for a TR it might be possible to come out $ ahead)? Even on my "normal" cars, I can't justify having anything less than a $1000 deductible unless I was making a fairly serious claim every couple of years (so I've come out $ ahead even though I've replaced a few windshields at my expense).

    Dear Ferraristi,

...true Kenco....but windshield. The back glass is called a rear window or rear glass...not rear windshield....not covered.

No govt scam here SM. Perhaps it's offset by the fact people here don't have to carry personal injury protection. So the "rest of us" have to carry uninsured motorist coverage. Soooo, I have to carry insurance for some loser that smashes into and hurts me.

...the insurance companies are doing just fine.

I rem talking to Dr Ferrari (Jim) and he telling me that the backlight is part of the TR's overall structure and that it should not be replaced with anything other than glass.

I like the tiny little Cavalino Rampante etched into the center of the rear window near the bottom edge on the original glass. That alone is worth the extra $2,400. Mine isn't cracked but it is starting to delaminate at the corners. I used the rear window defroster one time a few years ago and it worked. The Lexan pieces probably don't have the logo or the defogger. I bet they cloud up or etch over time like the front headlight covers of some Japanese cars. I used to have a 62 Corvette with both tops and the removable hard top had plastic side lights. They were starting to crack internal on the inside but not on the outside surfaces. The rear glass was still new looking and it was curved. I say stay with the original glass units but if you go with the plastic be sure to post pics.
