So my new 456 has a very minor gas odor in the cockpit, more in the rear than in the front. Did not notice it from the excitement of buying the car the first month, but now notice a very minor smell since I have been spending a lot of time in the car. Would appreciate how other people tackled this problem and what the solution was. Thanks.

Same for me I think- at first I thought it was teh smell of the leather it is that subtle but with windows closed after a little bit it does smell like fuel. I've heard the filler pipe has a rubber sleeve that can go after time- but I'm sure there's alot of folks here that are familiar with the problem and the solution- I'd love to do it myself even...

there are a number of possibilities, I have replaced a filler neck hose on one, the plastic return hose on another. plus the seals for the pump can leak. most fixes will require R&R tank, not too big a job. Figure replace all the rubber hosing. Do a search on fuel hose, Dave Helms has a permanent solution going.

My car started to get a fuel smell. We discovered that there was a crack in the tank once we pulled it. This was easily solved by a really competent welder. We did take the opportunity to replace all fuel lines. Also check inside the tank. We found one of the fuel pump mounts broken. Actually a pretty check repair job and one day's work, once we got the parts. No problems since.

Several of the places they can leak are impossible to see with the tank in place. It is a good test but is not a sure thing.

The plastic roll over valves on the top are common too.

yes but will give you an idea of were your poblem is. you will see smoke no matter where the leak is.then he can decide if he wants to drop the tank

Apparently not uncommon in F-Cars is a gas smell in the cockpit caused by drying up of the seal inside the gas cap. Try lubing it with your finger dipped in common brake fluid.
Do not attempt to use any other type of lubicration. This worked on my 348 spider after my dealer had replaced several expensive parts to no avail. This fix was suggested by a crack Ferrari mechanic and shop owner in Cos Cob CT called Jean Louis LeBretton.

Smellable gas vapor can come from leaks small enough they will never be found with a smoke machine. I have one and use it every week. It is a good tool but not as fool proof as that.

if you can smell gas vapors you can see air. no matter how small it is. any tech knows you find all leaks with that and 90% of the time you never smell gas. and if smoke doesnt come out. then you have a fuel leak or fuel was spilled somewhere else.

I've read all the post. I need some direction as to where the usual problems are located. I've checked the fuel cap and it looks ok. Going to a savvy shop that can put it on a lift.
    Thanks

John, check the rear fuel pump covers. They're plastic and with age, stress and ethanol they crack (sounds a lot like us old f*rts doesn't it? :)).

Also, as Brian said, the rollover valves on top of the tank are known leakers.

FMS Car Parts has aluminum versions of the fuel pump covers. If you haven't already changed them, I'd use those, and I'd change the rollover valves as well, just to be sure.

Diagnosing this problem can sometimes eat up more manhours than just changing parts that are known to go bad.

Its not the valves themselves that leak its the gaskets. # 195049 # 43 on diagram

Probably one of the least expensive parts you will ever buy.

The ones you will get now have been updated with a new rubber compound.

While they can be replaced without taking the tank completely out its a chore. The tank has to come all the way back to reach the forward valve, even then its a tough job.

Those aftermarket pump covers are an excellent preventative maintenance measure while you're there.

The tank will need to be removed to replace all the foam insulation that almost certainly smells like gas too.
