I am going to start doing this to get better tasting coffee. I am sick of crappy old Folgers pre ground...very blah tasting. I just had a pound of a medium roast ground at a local coffee house. From what I read on line, it said to not have more than a 2 week supply on hand as the beans lose their flavor rapidly past this time frame. Do I store this in the fridge or freezer? What brand do you guys buy for a medium roast fully caffeinated? I have read that 8 o' clock and Dunkin Donuts brand are good. Also, do you use distilled water? We have pretty good city water here. Thanks!!

I use dunkin doughnuts brand, I would avoid buying more then 7-10 days as they go stale very quickly. Do not freeze or refrigerate it as this will just damage them. Keep them in an air tight container with minimal light. I use filtered water.

grinding your own beans does improve the taste a little bit, but if you're a casual drinker, you won't notice a big difference. when i was in costa rica, we visited a coffee plantation that taught us when you grind beans, you first grind them for a couple of seconds, so that the beans are kind of cut in half, then you dump them onto a paper plate, stick another plate on top, shake them for a few seconds to get the leaves to move to the top, then blow the leaves off. apparently those leaves from the beans are what cause the coffee to have a bitter taste, so once you blow those off, you grind them the rest of the way.

Grinding daily for 20+ years. Fresh, plus a gold filter (rather than paper)lets all the aromatic oils thru.

Grinding is fun once in a while but do yourself a favor and just buy this:

It's inexpensive and can be found at the larger stores. We make coffee out of it and it's fabulous.

We drink espresso in our house and we grind our own. I get fresh beans every couple of weeks, you can taste them go stale. Figuring out the proper grind for your machine is the hard part, the grind varies by the bean and the machine. I got a stepless grinder a couple years back so you can get the grind exactly right.

You might want to change suppliers if your beans come with leaves mixed in.

i don't mean leaves like a plant, i mean the shavings that cover the beads that become prevalent when you grind them very, very shortly

On my new coffee maker it suggested that I add 1 TBSP of coffee per 5 oz. cup of Java. Holy SH*T was that strong!! I felt like I was in the Navy or in Italy. I cut it in half and it was near perfect. I will say that there is a huge taste difference between pre-ground and fresh ground beans. I don't think I can ever go back!

I get the Gevalia coffee sent out about once every two months and its a nice change from Folgers. Kirkland coffee has to be the worst- even more so than Safeway or Albertsons coffee. Dunkin is some fine drinkin', yesiree.

For my espresso contraption I use Cafe Bustelo, which is commonly available, and it makes a fine cup.

Coffee grinder here, I don't know what they're putting in those coffee cans either, but it isn't coffee. I buy my favorite flavor coffee beans(caffeinated) from a local supplier here, only in small quantities though. It's just me.

I keep the coffee beans in a sealed glass jar stored in the pantry. Never refrigerated. I use reverse osmosis filtered water for the best taste. Been doing this for several years.

Im lucky enough to have found locally a small business shop that roasts and grinds coffee beans daily. Their wonderful stuff doesnt last more than a week by the time im finished with it.

I will never go back to anything from a supermarket shelf unless im desperate. I seriously recommend looking in your local directories for a coffee roasting shop, no matter how big or small. Of course im presuming theres one locally, otherwise mail order from another state if you have to. A good shop should grind it for you too.

Saves the weekly or monthly mess of having to grind beans constantly at home.

I am very picky about my coffee. I just went through all of this not long ago.

I bought a Cuisinart combo coffee maker and grinder. Used it for a few months, and got tired of having to give it such a thorough cleaning after every use. When I was using it, I was buying Starbucks French Roast. You are supposed to store the beans in a cool, dry place, so I put them in a plastic container in the fridge. One thing I found that made a big difference in taste was the coffee filter. I was using a reusable gold filter, and the coffee tasted like crap. I couldn't figure out why. I then switched back to paper filters, and all was normal again. It tasted good, but wasn't worth the cleanup and expense of the beans.

8 O'Clock is crap! I read that it won some kind of taste test, I think in the Free Press, which is probably where you read it too. It was disgusting. Folgers is disgusting too. Surprisingly, I find the best pre-ground coffee is at Costco. They have their own Kirkland brand, in a large, brown metal canister. It's unbelievably good. Try it, you will be very surprised. I keep the canister in the fridge.

Thank you for your advice on the paper filter. I always questioned the metal filter. After making coffee in my roommates coffee pot over the weekend using a paper filter, I was amazed at how much better the coffee tasted. And I think it's getting on the stale side.

I was up in Tampa on business a couple weeks ago and picked up 2#'s of espresso for less than $10. It was good, damn good for the money. It was a pretty big factory, I saw a portion of it. It smelled soooooo good in there.

As a Marine in combat zones, I learned to accept what ever we have. From freeze dried to impressive french presses! So I know the value of good coffee. Fortunately I had a few friends here that endeavored to keep my in a vast but not unending supply of Starbucks!

Thats what I use a good bit of... but then some loyal friend sent me this....

Damn that stuff is good!!! I only buy a bag or three when I am in New Orleans, and when I use it up I have to do with out till I go back. Its silly but I am keeping it special!
