Very frustrated as I thought I had figured everything out. Going up north to boston for a couple weeks and want to bring A) the dog (50lbs) and B) the ferrari. So I could ship the Ferrari, but then what about the dog? Figured I'd throw a trailer on the back of the X5 and tow the Ferrari up and drive the dog up! Simple enough? Keep in mind I made up my mind to do this over the weekend and leave tomorrow. I'm kind of impulsive. Tow package on the BMW takes days to get in. I'm sure I could find one, but then I found out the whole package will cost about what it would cost to ship the car. So now I'm back to shipping the car, and driving up with the dog since I would no longer have to go 55 without the trailer. Any input or thoughts here? Anyone know of a decent service that could get my car up there quickly? I'm not afraid of an open trailer if my car stays on it the whole time and I have a cover on the car. Is that naive of me? Thanks for the help with the decision making process.
I'd say you're SOL if you're leaving tomorrow and want the car there for the whole trip. Shipping from West Palm to Boston will be at least 2 days, but with an autocarrier, probably a lot more than that. FedEx is supposed to be pretty good, call them.
rent a car/SUV that already has a tow bar on it already? will save the mileage and abuse on the X5 at the same time.
Fedex car shipping is not any faster than the other companies in my experience, but they are supposed to have better communication. I like to tow my own car so I don't have to coordinate with anyone else, but getting the hitch and brake controller will take a few days. For the minivan we paid about $600 for that stuff, and my trailer cost me around $800 including the refurb materials. If you need a trailer I have an extra one, but the tires on it are pretty crappy, and it is missing ramps. BT
Put the tow package on, then just plan to use it again, and just keep amortizing the cost over each tow, not just the first.
