I will be potentially moving to Sarasota for a business oppertunity, and i am currently working in NYC/NJ. Anyone have suggestions as to where you think the best neighborhoods/area to live in Sarasota is?

    Thanks!

West of Trail would be perfect for you. It's near downtown, near the hotspot restaurants on Hillview, near Southgate Mall (nice). Not too far from the beach, too. St. Armands and Siesta Key very easy to access from here.

If you want to rent, drop me a PM, I can hook you up with someone who can find you a rental. Stuff is cheap here right now.

Looked at a listing for a nice 10 car garage on Bird Key a while back. The agent said if I bought the garage they could throw in a house.

just my .02, but when I lived in SRQ, I found it to be very boring and not to much to do. Beautiful beaches but I felt that was it. I could drive around all day, and very rarely find anyone with in 20 yrs of my age; unless I was at the beach...

The flood gates may open, but just my honest opinion.

I would either go north towards Tampa or South towards Naples/Ft.Myers...

For nightlife, this is nothing other than a tertiary market, that's for sure. Keep in mind I was a touring club DJ (techno) for years and I would get booked as a headliner in NYC, Chicago, Seattle, DFW, Vancouver, Atlanta, Miami - and then in secondary markets like Charlotte and Tampa...but I would NEVER, EVER get called to play in Sarasota. Never. It was weird. But that's the kind of town this is - the club/clubbing people are real wannabes and so are the "clubs" around here. Very half-assed. The real action is in Tampa, but even that's not all that great. Ryan shouldn't expect too much in the way of cosmopolitan young people and nightlife. Hell, we don't even have a Diesel or a Lucky store here. Plenty of early bird specials and a Saks Fifth Avenue, though.

I appreciate all of the input fellas, thanks. Family and friends are all in the tri-state area, so I will jump back and forth quite a bit. I'm ok with the sarasota being somewhat boring, as I could use the change of pace and I always have something going on (car/bikes/etc.) Any good surf in Sarasota?
I'll shoot pms to you guys.
    best,
    Ryan

Surf? In FLORIDA??? LOL... Um, not unless there's an approaching hurricane. ;)

My mom lives over there, so I'm back and forth from time to time... Unless you're age 70+ and a good time is a round of golf, followed by the earlybird buffet, and getting to bed by 8 or 9pm, it's B O R I N G.

No offense to anyone, but SW FL is a nice place for the elderly to retire, it's not a place for the living... It's "God's waiting room".

It's very much a wanna-be West Palm or Naples IMO. Years ago, a girl I knew from SF described Sarasota as "backwoodsy". This place is like ground zero lately for investment Ponzi scams, too. I guess it's easy to bilk 80 year old people out of millions if you have the right approach. Trent's right - after 9 pm on weekdays, this place rolls up the streets. Anything that doesn't close usually will get shut down or fined by the noise police sooner or later. LOL.

Biking: there a some trails here. Make sure you stay on trails and not major roads, because the 90 year old drivers will mow you down because that cannot see you.

We have a few car shows throughout the year, notably the Exotics on St. Armands. If you like golf, you'll be in heaven around here.

This is a fantastic place to live if you are right on the water. I lived on south Longboat Key for nearly 10 years and the beach was my backyard. I've never liked the place as much after I moved away from the beach.

    Good perspective remix

When i said bike i meant, motorcycle though, ha! I know Flordia isnt known for their twisties, but I'll bring a trailor to get it to the nearest track (mind telling me where that is?) If we are looking to party my girlfriend has friends in Tampa and Miami so i dont it will be too big of an issue, and because our our business is located directly in Sarasota why not live on a beautiful beach for 2 years?

If you ride a bike here, make sure your life & medical insurance is current. Chances are you would be dead within a week. The Old FOOLS here will run you over and keep on going. Just remember you grand parents live in Sarasota, their parents live in Venice. Bradenton is where all of the Gang Bangers summer.

This is an alert/description they just put out on a string of armed robberies:

o Wears dark clothing (long sleeved jacket, sweater, or sweat shirt with hood and long dark pants, possibly jeans)

o Talks like a thug (victims report him as a Black male but witnesses describe him as a White male)<-----LOL!

o He had a red backpack in two cases

o Victims never saw hands or he wore gloves

*Looks like I will need a CCW and a Mastiff

    This thread is too funny.

    Jim's right.

We affectionately call Bradenton "Braden-Tucky", and it fits. Down here you'll see nearly as many union flags on pick up trucks as you might in deep, southern Alabama.

Manatee County has both some of the wealthiest and poorest people in the state. That's a fact, Jack.

Oh yeah, summertime. 95 degrees, 100% humidity, rains everyday (for a few minutes at a time and the clears up) bugs you've never seen before...the biting kind that make you itch for days and days.

The people around here are perpetually lost, too. They come from places like New Jersey ;) (haha), but they forget how to drive. Just wait til you see the city's proud statue over by Marina Jacks...it's a 60ft tall sculpture of a wartime photo from WWII. It was going to be removed, but some old coot give the city big $$$ to keep it. I think they ought to park a DeSoto next to this with an old Victrola belting out the tunes.

    And I quot-eth:

We also had "CarHenge" for a while..LOL....some bright ****er decided it was artistic to bury a bunch of jalopies nose down (in a circle) right at the corner of Gulfstream and US41...

This place is ****ing weird sometimes...
