Interested in 05F430s now that they have gone down in price. One car is around 8K miles. What are the major things to check for during the PPI? Is there a checklist I can download and print?
For the owners has the car been solid till now?
One big concern of mine is that the car is now out of warranty.

I've had an '05 since new. There are a bunch of TSB's on them. Any dealer can tell you if they have been done by looking up the VIN. These are performed for free. The only thing serious to check for besides signs of abuse, etc., is the exhaust manifolds. Many have failed and I suspect they all will sooner or later. Ferrari has a new design beginning sometime in late 2007 I believe. A car that already has them should be considered a plus. Mine started going at about 12K miles a little under 3 years. In most states, the warranty is good for only 3 years on them. I believe CA is eight years and some other states could be longer also. You would have to check with local authorities. My car has been a solid car. I've heard of some that use quite a bit of oil and I suspect but cannot confirm that these cars may have been wailed on from the beginning instead of going through the factory recommended 600 miles break in. My car uses zero oil even on track days. Find out about oil use if you can.

Bought an 05 a few weeks ago and I agree with the above. I too had big concerns about the lack of warranty so I chose to buy mine from a dealer who CPOed it and warrantied it for a year. I am now able to renew the warranty yearly until 2015.

Question for aahtt......what does it cost you to renew the warranty each year?

A few months before my warranty expired, FNA sent me a very slick color brochure extolling the virtues of extending my warranty while directing me to inquire at my dealer as to cost. To get what was essentially a one year extension of the full factory warranty was in the neighborhood of 6K. There were other cheaper options. If memory serves, you could not extend the full warranty for more than 2-3 years but there were cheaper options that went beyond that. I opted out since my headers were done and I had driven it enough to feel confident any defects had already reared their heads. If it had been a crappy car, I would have just sold it. So far, it was a wise choice. HOWEVER, if I were in the market for a used one, especially with low miles, I would give it serious consideration at least for one year.

Any car that is out of warranty can be certified and warrantied by the dealer using Ferrari's Power Warranty which covers engine, transmission and some electrical. This can be renewed up to six years so up to 2011 for a 2005 at the cost of 2500$ a year.
after the first 6 years, you can still renew for 4 more years until 2015 but this time with a Powertrain Warranty which covers the engine and transmission only at similar cost according to what I have been told.
When I bought mine, the dealer threw the Power warranty into the deal and told me it cost him 2500$.

More things to have checked during the pre purchase inspection?

Also, if I'm buying the car from a non-Ferrari dealer out of warranty is it still possible to get an extended warranty from the nearest dealer?

I'm pretty sure you can only get the FNA warranty if you buy the car from a franchised dealer but you can always ask.

I bought my 05 spider in Jan this year at 3500KM and already had 3 tracks day plus a long 100 KM drive 2 weeks ago; it is now around 6000KM.
I sent it to dealer for pre-warranty expiration check last week and found nothing needs to be repaired/replaced - it is solid :) : I am very happy with the car.

They will certify any current Ferrari at any authorized Ferrari dealer. I believe the car has to be less than 10 years old. Example, I can got to FOW with my '99 360 and pay them a $600 inspection fee to see if my car qualifies. Then pay $3600-4200 for a one year factory warranty. Hardly worth it at all!

If you got the money the will sell you a warranty.

I'm sure there is big, big profit in extended warranties. I had heard from an excellent source that the reason extended warranties were added to all US 430 spiders was because dealers weren't selling the expected amount.
