Consensus on complete color change 308/328

There are some very good deals on few white QVs lately ($26k for an 85). I'm guessing because of the color, not enough "rude factor" for alot of buyers. Very tempting but my next ferrari will be Yellow or Black. What is the consensus here reguarding a complete color change vs. factory color vs. value? Do you guys think it would actually hurt the value of a 308/328 that much in the future given that some colors are alittle harder sell. ( I happen to like white, not slamming anyones car)

 

If the car is a nice driver, I don't think it would matter much. It is, however, very expensive to do a quality respray on a 308 so I think it would be cheaper to just buy the color you want.

The answer, IMO is definately "yes", the car is devalued by the cost to paint it again, to the original color matching the Factory records...

As most say, to many "it doesn't matter".....drive it, use it up, crush it into a two foot square cube.......*SMASH*

But the days of plentiful 308/328s are *looking around* .....OVER.

And as the cars move into collections or the graveyard, the original ones (repainted is certainly okay all the laquer is crap by now) will be the most prized....

I just know I sigh as the Resale Red chips off of one of mine, revealing the blue below.......shame on me, for not even asking the question on what was otherwise a very nice car!

I am still happy with it but one of these days will paint it back, the Paint Sticker is still on the lid! Not bad for a 1976 steel car.......

Got a quote for a high-quality respray...not bare-metal...to yellow and it was around $10k.

 

My 308gtbi Euro was originally Silver. About 6 years ago I completely change the color to yellow. Never been sorry about it either. Also my serial number GTBI is the last registered number for a 308gtbi 2v. I have more people looking and taking interest in the car since the color was changed to yellow, not so much when it was Silver. Most comments were silver was a safe color, or do not paint it red...too many red Ferraris. So I choose to be different. Nothing against the other colors, so do not come after me like pack wolves. Paint it to what makes you happy I personally do not think it will effect the value too much if any. Especially if it is done right. This is my personal opion.

 

It goes without saying that "it's your car do what you want," but I think there's no doubt that a color change hurts the value of the car when you go to sell it.

That's not to say "don't do it." Lots of things hurt the value of the car, including driving it. It's only money.

 

But since you haven't bought a car yet, I'd just hold out. You have 2 color choices with yellow and black, you should be able to find one. Black isn't that uncommon.

Although maybe if you found a solid car that needed paint, and could get it for a steal . . .

 

They quit using laquer long before QV went into production so the paint on most is still pretty good.
I see no reason not to do a color change, in my opinion if done well will not be a big negative. Again in my opinion there are a lot of them out there.

It will be expensive to do a quality color change so it better be important to you.

OK, the original color of your car is red. It is in need of a repaint, and minor blemishes taken care of. If you have it repainted it is still not original paint, so what difference would it make what color it is. Original is original, repaint is a repaint. The only thing you can say when selling it is that "I had it painted back to original color" and chances are that you will have it painted by other than OEM paint, since there are many finer finishes on the market. And by the way 6 years ago when I was a lead painter at a local high end body shop a repaint(not bare metal) ran about $2500.00-3000.00, add a $1000.00 on for color change. That was using Akzo Nobel basecoat/clearcoat. I know prices have gone up, but with todays economy I am sure you can get it done for close to that.

 

Ferraris are easy to color change as the color stops at the engine trunk lids.....

Although most resprays posted here pull the doors , glass all that, so there's "paint" then there's "paint"......

So at the end of the day do what makes you happy....

You just basically answered your own question. White 308's aren't selling for top dollar so how could changing the color hurt it's value? If it's a $26,000 factory white car, what would it be as a well painted red car, $20,000? Of course not.

Besides, if it's your car, do what you want to to it. If you want it pink with a yellow stripe, that's your call. not anyone elses.

 

Remember, it's not a repaint that affects value - it's that pesky service. A white 308 that just had a engine out service, yada, yada, yada will ALWAYS be worth more that a red/tan that last saw a shop in 1992.

Mine is getting done from black to black and the glass is coming out because there is no other clean way to do it.

 

You trim out half the caulking, paint to that line...then redo the whole seam....LOL!

J/k... I agree with you and after new mouldings glass breakage, etc....the $10K paint job is at your door!!!

Front windshield does not have to be pulled...remove sealant from around...replace with new after repaint. Rear window is set in rubber and can be removed, gasket may not like it, so be ready for a replacement. Sail windows, doors, front hood, rear bonnet and bumpers..easy removal.Also headlight surrounds and louvers. Actually in my opinion on repaints the 308 are quite easy for removal of parts than other vehicles. Since the engine compartment needs no change in color, nor under either the hood or the rear bonnet. Front compartment has the liner surround. With everything off there really is not much to paint. I believe when I painted mine several years ago, I used a half gallon unreduced...and that was only because it was yellow and I wanted enough basecoat coverage. And the only reason it cost more to paint a Ferrari is because it is the "F" word..just like Corvette. Although a Corvette should cost a hell lot more to paint...been there done that. I say if you are capable prep and paint it yourself, or I am sure you have a friend in the business somewhere that can help you.

I don't see that Ferrari people have gotten quite as anal about having original air in the tires like a lot of the Corvette crowd has, but that could change, and future buyers may want original color in and out and all original parts (no dizzy conversions, for example),and original wheels, etc., yada yada.

Now, if you are planning on selling your car in the near future, I would suggest factory color would probably be best, if your heirs will be selling it, paint it what ever damn color you want.

And, if you look around,and know where to go, you can get a top notch show quality BC/CC bare metal repaint, which includes removal and stripping of all door jambs, deck lids, etc, off car paint of doors/lids, for in the $5-$6K range. Body work extra. R&R of interior probably a little extra also.

If you go to a collision center, they will want a fortune as you will be a PITA to them. If you go to a Ferrari place, they will want two fortunes just because. The people that do top notch work at decent prices can be hard to find, they usually don't advertise, and your project may take 3-4 months, as they are probably working on 3-4 other cars at the same time, and they tend not to rush things.

I paid $1200 in 1986 for a bare metal on my 308 min SoCal,and recently paid $7K for a bare fiberglas, BC/CC on my Corvette here in AZ to the above specs, and it is fabulous (the paint alone cost $1800). If I were to repaint my 308 again, I would go to this guy also as he is a Ferrari certified body repairman also

We owned a body shop for 30 years or so, and I just finished building a new shop with a paint booth, so I'm very capable of doing this BUT.... when I was doing the belt service on my 84 QV (its red) I noticed that the tubular frame was also red, so in theory you would need to remove the engine to truely do a COMPLETE color change. Would look like s-it to have a yellow car with red structure showing through the undercoating in places due to road rash. If the car was white to begin with it would look more like a sealer without the top color. I guess my concern is hurting the future value of a Ferrari by doing this, but lately with one 83QV selling for $17k and two others(1985) between $22-26k it sure is tempting!

Did they ever figure out up there that a repaint color change is supposed to include painting the door jams and inside the trunk lid the same color also?

When I lived in Helena and Bozeman, back in the 1970's, I don't know how many cars I saw that nice new paint jobs on the outside, and then when you opened the door, there was the original color.

I think that went out in the 70s, haven't seen any of those paint jobs in a long long time. See alot of so. cal. vehicles burried in high build primers that spyder webb due to the heat and too much material, just finished stripping and respraying a black 911 SC from the Fresno area. I agree with most, a PROPER repaint of a 308/328 would start around $9k and go up from there.

 

I don't get why color changes on vintage cars don't affect value (except perhaps positively) and a high quality color change on a more recent vehicle (like being 20 -35 yo is recent) would???

By Vintage, I assume you mean 1950's and earlier.

Those cars didn't have trim tags with paint codes and no records exist of what color they were painted from the factory, unless you find some place hidden in a trunk or such that has original color left, so anything goes. A stock color of some sort would probably appeal to the purist more, on an other wise stock, unmolested car. But, a lot of those cars lost their original engines/trans, etc way back when,and once the original motor is gone, there is no need to bother with original color for profit.
