OT: First Ever: Bugatti Veyron races Mcalren F1

What a great video. The old McLaren held its own.

 

The Veyron did not use lc and didn't give full trottle... I think the veyron eats the mclaren f1 normaly at a straight line.

 

Seems fishy. The Veyron raped the zonda F in last series. I doubt the F1 is THAT much faster than a Zonda F.

 

At the risk of Magazine racing:

McLaren F1:
0-60 mph : 3.2 sec
0-100 mph : 6.3 sec
0-150 mph : 12.8 sec
0-200 mph : 28.0 sec

Veyron:
0-60 mph : 2.5 sec
0-100 mph : 5.4 sec
0-155 mph : 13.3 sec
0-186 mph : 16.8 sec
0-200 mph : 24.2 sec


Assuming the Veyron didnt use LC (which it didn't look like), lets pretend the cars were even to 60 mph. The Mclaren goes 60-150 in 9.6 seconds while the Veyron does it in 10.5. Thats why the F1 held its own. From 150-200, the veyron walks away (and above), but If they only raced to 180-200, I can see how the F1 was ahead for a while.

I agree with your assessment. The published numbers for the Veyron are with LC. Without LC you can see the "real world" difference. Had the Veyron used LC they would have been more evenly matched to 150/160 and then it would have been game over (as the video showed) for the F1.

Quite sure Ferrari wouldn't allow an Enzo [especially an FXX] in that mix....perhaps we'll never see that one.

 

The Veyron is fortunate that there were not any turns involved. It might have been found trailing by quite a significant margin.

Would have been more interesting from a roll, too...say, 40 mph.

I was pleased with how the lack of launch control on the Bugatti simulated real world conditions...

But seriously, if you're in a Veyron and know that you're going up against a Macca at the next red light, wouldn't your finger be on the button 50 yards prior to stopping??

You're testing two cars in a drag race to see which is faster. Why would you not use every possible advantage with both cars? Not using launch control was just stupid and those numbers prove just how much faster the Bugatti would be - and how amazingly uninteresting the race would be - if the Bugatti was tested properly.

Ahh, then you have my complete and utter understanding.

I will say that what Clarkson said after the fact was pretty spot on. Something to the effect of, "Well, you've just seen the biggest race in recent history that surprised absolutely no one."

Of course the Bugatti would win. It's still a little irritating that they didn't use launch control, though, because in reality, given all of its advantages, it should have blown the Macca away.

What was the quote? Like, if a McLaren F1 went by a stationary Veyron at 100 mph and the Veyron launched at that exact meeting point, the Veyron would still beat the McLaren to 200 mph.

Insane.

 

From the numbers posted I would say Clarkson had his hand on it! ... 4 seconds is not that much of a difference (28 versus 24), considering it takes more than 4 seconds for the Veyron to even get to the McLarens starting speed of 100mph.

I actually think it's fair game that Hammond didn't use the Veyron's Launch Control given that The Stig doesn't even have the benefit of traction control in the F1. In the end, the faster car still won, and the footage was entertaining which is what Top Gear is all about.

It wasn't a test as we already know the answer - it was a demonstration of brute force from the Bugatti and fun that they did it that way!
