I didn't "hear" Electromotive had a 12 cylinder option. We installed Tech3 ECUs on a couple of V12s which have full-sequential injection capability on V8s but only had phased-sequential injection capability on V12s at the time of our installation. The later Electromotive firmware upgrade installation allowed full-sequential fuel injection on V12s and made a noticeable difference in performance. It doesn't hurt to look into their latest upgrades. As far as other capabilities go: I found it better if the ECU concentrates on ignition and injection and forgets about other functions such as controlling pumps and fans. The tech3 seemed to get confused trying control coolant temperature, for example.

I didn't write very clearly what I was thinking. I meant to say that if you saw one then they must be out there. Read what they say on the 3r it soulnd lke they are putting 2 injectors per driver to get to 12 and in that case thry can never be independant, it sounds like that was not the case on the earlier units.

I agree that sequential is not really optional, it's required.....now I just need to concivnce the euc people of that as most of them are telling me, "oh you just batch fire".....which gets the WRONG stamp.

Most of that is done, there will be some more on the heads in a couple weeks but we are moving into a new phase. I've left quite a few boring details undone and I'll need to finish them up, and start doing stuff that looks like a normal rebuild.....and that means I'm making progress.

You KNOW what everyone is telegraphing here.... "WE WANT TO SEE THE VIDEO OF THIS THING SMOKING
    ITS TIRES UP YOUR STREET - N O W ! ! ! "... or words to that effect.

Seriously, one of the most fun and LONG threads I've seen to date here. Worth the wait.

Ps - but seriously - when do we get to see the video?? :) :)

Okay, he's done it, now what?

Once you actually completed the "test drive" in that noisy contraption what is it really good for?

It's not like he built something really useful,

A quick update. I’m getting really close to finished on the efi side job. 2 more weeks at the most and I can start turning the TR head intake ports into chips on the mill.

I think I have the ECU thing figured out now once and for all…or at least until I change my mind again.

It looks like the answer is a motec M800 and some creative wiring/set-up. The base unit has 12 injector drivers that can each drive 2 high impedance injectors, so I wire both the low and high power injectors to the same driver. Then I put a bank of solid state relays on the high power injectors and use one of the aux outs to trigger the relays turning on the high power injector at the desired load point. It’s not a perfect solution as there will be rich in a 0.1 kPa window between where the injectors turn on and where the maps as set to reflect the additional fuel but on a sensor that goes from 0 to 100, 0.1is a pretty small mistake that would be all but impossible to notice.

By living with this little error I get just 1 ecu that the car is mostly already wired to accept, individual cylinder tuning maps and traction control. If I find the error is noticeable I can always add a second ecu later but the car will be up and running without spending crazy money.

I’m also going back to the distributor plan so I don’t need the ignition expanders. A 1984 engine should have distributors anyway to look right and again I can always add a direct fire ignition later if there is an actual need.

The only thing that could make this an even better plan is would be if someone following this thread is a motec dealer who can give me the “this it toooo cool” (AKA the “you poor stupid b*stard”) discount ;)

No word from cam guy……I’ll call tonight.

Looks like you're going to have to put the "old search" on ebay.

I had one pop up last week (Motec 800) with a starting bid of $1 but i deleted it.

I'll check, generally even on ebay they are not cheap....the US dealers put quite a markup on them....like 100% figuring most people need many hours of tech support to get it running right and they throw that in "free". There are ways to not pay the 100% markup though ;)

Mark, what would be your recomendation for the best ecu for a Ferrari V8 - this Motec also? I know that someday I am going to want to go ITB, so I might as well start thinking about what parts I am going to need.

P.S. If you recommend the Motec, I promise not to bid on any that come up on ebay until yours is safely in hand! :)

The best is tough to define. A motec M800 would be an excellent option for sure and has the most stuff. I like the cylinder tuning maps a lot for example becasue it lets you really get stuff matched nicely...but if you can live without all the stuff there are a LOT of options for a V8 that are good. A lot of people here run Electromotive and are happy. Haltechs are nice to if you have a cis car becasue they will read the stock triggers and fire the stock distrubutors making the install pretty easy (motec will as well).

Now the really funny thing with me deciding I need an M800 is that way way back at the beginning of this thread I sold an M800 to pay for the TR heads thinking I didn't need it......DOH!

Thanks, sounds like the Motec is the way to go. I have a Mondial t so I'd keep the lost spark ignition, or even go to coil per.

After a few emails with Australian motec engineer that started out with basically “it should work but there will be some issues at the cross-over point” we got to "Switching injector power on and off through a relay is crap no matter how you do it so two ECUs would be the only way to do it."

It turns out the motecs will link over their canbus and act like 1 big ecu. I didn’t know that. There is no question this is the best option. I guess I need to make sure I have enough space and enough wires for 2 ecus.....

The MOTEC fatory is only a couple of suburbs away from me, so if you need a representative on their doorstep at any time, give me a whistle.

    Fantastic, thanks1

They don’t happen to have a factory outlet store where they unload the scratch and dents or warranty repair units extra cheap do they? :)

Yeah, I was sort of going over that one mentally and trying to imagine how to implement that gracefully. Wasn't coming up with much. I think the least thing you would need would be some sort of intermediary controller that would bring the secondaries online in steps instead of a straight relay that is ON or OFF. Two boxes that are already set up to talk to each other sound like a *much* better plan!

Maybe they do have returns and upgrade stuff.

Drop me an email to: [email protected] and tell me exactly what you need and I'll wander down there and take a look.
