365 GTC clock removal and repair

    Do any of you have any tips for removing the clock/gauge panel from a 365 GTC and/or where you would recommend sending the clock to have it repaired? Have any of you had a quartz conversion performed on your clock so that it won't break again?

    Any old school clocksmith should be able to repair it. From a clocksmith point of view a car clock must look like a 10 dollar piece, so it might take some time to convince them that you want that particular piece repaired and are really really willing to pay say a hundred or two for a service, re-manufacturing of worn/broken parts and maybe installing inserts for axles that have ground their holes so long that the cogs start slipping... (usually there are no jewels in cheap movements, so they'll grind themselves to death). Sometimes schools - if you can locate one - are more willing to work on odd jobs like these - comparing to people that try to run a business.

    FWIW, I would never replace the movement with a quartz unit. For me the Ferrari magic comes from all these little bits and pieces.

    Depending upon the particular type of clock you have, you might be able to have Mike Eck update it: http://www.jaguarclock.com/. He adds an integrated circuit board to replace the contacts in the original, without removing any original parts so it's totally reversible. I'm continually astounded to find the updated clock in my E-type keeping perfect time, having owned a similar car in period.

    Till the mid 90th you could buy at Veglia the mechanicalinside for about 50.000lire about 25 euro now.
    Why didn't i buy at that time 10 or more ?

    I am in California and had North Hollywood Speedometer repair the clock on my 330 gt. They replaced the entire movement and have made it work as new. They are probably one of the best guage and clock restorers around. My repair was around $300. The clock keeps perfect time and I am very happy.

    To pull the clock, disassemble the glovebox and work through the glovebox opening. At least that's how to do it in a 330GTS.
    +1 on the no-quartz movement. Might as well put dilithium crystals in the engine.

    If you have access to older issues of FCA's "Prancing Horse", I published an article on clock repair for my 330 GTC in issue 84, page 29.

    I agree with the previous information, the the best way to get access to the clock is to remove the glove box inner compartment. There are four screws (two on each side) at the front that hold in in place. If your car has the passenger shelf, remove that first. The inner compartment can then be pushed downward from the inside. On my car it's a tight fit. Even downward pressure with both hands on the rear of the compartment will get it out.

    My clock movement look differnt from those shown. I had it rebuilt, it worked for a total of three days.

    Sometimes it is difficult to remove the glovebox, as it is a very tight fit. Loosening/removing the bolts that secure the right side of the dashboard to the body of the car will help.

    Cleaning/repairing the original clock movement can be a crapshoot. Sometimes they work, other times they don't. You can replace the movement with a modern quart type, but then the second hand will not move with a nice tick that the mechanical clock had.
