snippet: "In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google announced late Tuesday that it is developing an operating system for PCs based on its Chrome Web browser...Google said the operating system would initially be aimed at netbooks, the compact, low-cost computers that have turned the PC world on its head. It said the open-source software, called Chrome OS, would be available in the second half of next year...Google has long promoted a vision of computing in which applications delivered over the Web play an increasingly central role, replacing software that runs on the desktop. In that world, applications run directly inside an Internet browser, rather than atop an operating system, the traditional software that controls most of the operations of a PC...In an unusual move, Intel, the world’s largest chip maker, has worked on developing a Linux-based operating system called Moblin as well. The company has aimed the software at netbooks and smartphones in a bid to spur interest for its mobile device chip sold under the Atom brand..."

Yep, generally speaking I'm a Google fan and dabble in their suite of products (gmail, docs, Picasa, Chrome). However, I'm more of a curious plain jane user as opposed to a hard-core techie so my attention drifts and lately I've become a Firefox convert for browsing. I don't recall any stellar reviews of Android, but perhaps its gotten lost in the iphone hoopla.

Well, I'd imagine you're the target audience they're going to try and capture with Google Wave http://wave.google.com/

It'll be a real-time collaboration platform with email, photo sharing, social networking, etc in one place. I'm pretty sure they'll incorporate all of this into their OS. There's a 1 hour 20 minute presentation on it so just skip through if you want to see it in action. From the sounds of it, this is a big move towards cloud computing where all or most of the information resides on the server side.

    Here's more behind the idea:

i dunno. Google keeps a track record of ever damn thing you do and look at as it is. its too much "big brother watching" to me to trust. i have killed several application in my registry and in my processes tabs ( 32 and 64 bit) that should not have been there as it is. i have nothing to hide, but i dont like being watched either.

    hmmmmm. ill wait and see.

Thanks; I'll ck out the links.

Changing subjects a bit...I noticed that the Google "Pack" includes the option of Firefox, which I thought was a competitor of Chrome. Link: http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html?hl=en&brand=GPMD&utm_source=en_US-et-more&utm_medium=et&utm_campaign=en_US

Didn't google announce this a year ago? Calling it Cloud computing? It's suppose to launch before your windows OS.

In a way, yes and in a way, no. Yes because of the obvious browser competition and no because of contractual deals that help Google push its search product (specifically its AdWords advertising product) to more users. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer and create a win-win scenario...sort of.

Part of Google's strategy, before Chrome was even in the works, was to push their advertising network out through as many channels as possible. You'll still see that as the big push through a lot of their products and buyouts. There's plenty of room for competitors to be partners on different levels though. Very similar to how they provide their AdWords product to other search engines even though they compete in the same space. They both benefit from the revenue stream.

Correct. It's been something that's been anticipated for a long time now and probably another strategic reason why Microsoft wanted so badly to buy Yahoo! to at least compete in the search space to possibly offset future losses elsewhere. Well...that didn't work out quite like they planned so it's back to the drawing board.

I've actually found myself starting to use Bing instead of Google more often lately. I don't know who they think they are, but I think they're arrogant a-holes who feel it's their prerogative to sell our personal information.

I'd prefer to rely on Google than Windows. Microsoft sell 50% crap, and 50% crap with fancy packaging.

However, as the Google OS will be Open Source, we might see a spy-free version.

I just watched the full video (LONG) of the Google Wave demo:

    http://wave.google.com/help/wave/about.html#video

All I can say is WOW... it's very slick and I would love to try it out. << CAN ANYONE GET ME AN INVITE?? PM me please! >>

I use Chrome for my browsing, Gmail for my personal and work email, Picasa for all my photos, and I think they work great. I've used Hotmail and Yahoo Mail in the past and now they seem way behind when I go back into them.

The only time I use BING is for the maps... I think the "birds eye" feature is much more usable that Google's street view.

I have an Apple Air laptop for casual "on the couch" browsing and f-chatting and a Dell desktop PC for work. While the Apple is a great design I prefer Windows Vista's interface to Apple's OS, just easier for me and I never had a problem with it. (I think Apple's are just easier for people that don't know what they're doing).

Still, as far as a OS, I would love to see a Google alternative to Windows.
