Don't just doubt it, it is wrong. He can guess all he likes but Ferrari told us it was for the boot. Since they built the car we always figured they knew why it was there.

My ring also appears to be an add on. I looked at my other car and there is a location that had something welded to it but now missing. Same area as the welded ring. Unless our cars has the addition of a ring due to like minded PO, possibly it was a factory part as was stated by a professional here on the site. I did not need to remove the ring to do my TB. (Sure is nice having 2 identical cars)

The Boxer needs one on each side, the side scoop looks like a poor attempt as it empties at the header area but could use a hose to extend it..

No....If you look at the botom of the air scoop fitting at the fender mating point, THAT's where a slot is in the bottom for blown rain to fall out........both sides the oil cooler duct has one too..

Rifledriver is telling you, the rubber of the CV joint would COOK from the cat's heat otherwise and last about two months....with this hose it might make a year! (The Warranty period).........Ferrari rarely engineer's to the duration "forever"....always remember that.

ALL Ferrari welds are home grown......."Mr. Blobby was a Factory welder" one publication noted in print....LOL!

And the frames WERE outsourced, they were premade so this was just a tack on detail...literally!

You'll note the frame designation itself was unchanged 1976 - 79.......they were field engineering for the exhaust change....

Hey we have another topic to talk about besides Timing Belts. And remember, that hose must be replaced every 30k or 3 years.

The BBs need it really bad but they didnt have cats or air inj also the boots do get some air flow on a BB but I have a client who takes his on long trips and needs boots every year. Ferrari was very worried about that boot on the 308 though due to the emission equipment.

Just between you and I Paul, I have been working on 308s in dealers since they were new and find it funny all the internet experts here can't even decide for sure that it is original or what it is for. Sheesh

Its like my better half says "And they vote".

Ain't this the truth...After having a couple of inner CV boots fry over the years and spray CV grease frikken' everywhere, I now change them at the major service intervals. Berry cheap insurance! Some of my 308/328 clients feel otherwise. If she's not leaking, they must be good...

Little do they know that changing the boots isn't the hard part; it's getting the CV joint grease off of "everywhere" when they let loose...never mind the "ever so cool" smoke trail off the back of the car. LOL!

P.S. - My first paragraph in the old thread referenced above states that the air tube is to specifically cool the cat converters - I now stand corrected.

Perhaps another way to think of this is that the air tube helps to counteract the huge increase in temperatures in that whole area of the car due to the retrofit addition of the cat converters.

"He can guess all he likes but Ferrari told us it was for the boot. Since they built the car we always figured they knew why it was there"

Yeah, one would hope so... ;)

Yes, it makes sense now though one would think they could have ducted air to that location with a properly placed wing or scoop. But then again, if you can just route it off the airbox intake, why not? It's a lot easier. The pic that Steve posted really makes the "heat" source apparent plus If the DRIVER says so, I definitely believe it!

OTOH, I have worked on things that company folks said "this thing was added to do [ABC]" and, when later talking to the person who actually designed it years before and was now long gone from the company, said, "Heck no, where did they get that? it was put there for [XYZ]."

Anyway, thanks for the explanation and the pics!

Thats very true especially with Ferrari. There is no answer or piece of information most of the Italians there will admit to not having, the collective corporate ego will not allow it. It was a constant challenge to us to try and sift through to find reliable information and answers. After enough years you got so you knew who to ask.

A few of them after a while would even go so far to admit in private " We build cars, we don't fix them. You tell us how to fix them".

I buy the "cooling the CV joint " explanation. Two QVs belonging to a couple of buddies both needed inner CV joint boots. One had the hose in place though not aimed at the joint (does anyone know the original length this hose is supposed to be); the other was missing the hose. But on both of them the ring wasn't welded on. It was held onto a welded, threaded mount by a 10mm bolt.

    Well now I'm curious again!

Since I'm a long way from my 328 (about 3000 miles) I can't look at it so I was looking at the Ricambi site and of their various parts diagrams for the 328/308. I don't see this hose shown for a 328 on the equivalent page that I do see it for a 308. But I have to admit that some of the part stuff is hard for me to find because sometimes it seems that the part I am looking for is not on the page that, by title, it seems that it should be. It MAY be there somewhere on the 328 parts pages but I haven't yet found it

SO...does the 328 use the same setup from the airbox?

I don't think the 328 has a dedicated hose, but I believe that there is still a fairly significant opening in the tube going from the fender opening to the air filter box inlet to let some air flow into the general area in a similar manner (and let the water out) -- see "inner elements" (TAV 103 in the non-abs SPC or TAV 104 in the abs SPC). Couple of other things helped the 328 -- no air injection during warm-running and, with only the single cat, it's generally a little more "open" with more distance from the half-shaft to the cat.

I said screw it and ordered 2 1/2 inch ID SS hose from McMaster Carr. It's a little heavier, but will last forever. 5 ft cost under 60.00 can get 3 hoses as they are 17 inches. One for me, one for a buddy anyone else need one?

Where is this ring that is welded to teh frame?

I cannot locate one on my car, and I have it apart down there.

Maybe since my speedo is in KPH, it was originally destined to be a Euro car with no cats and no need for the duct?

    Thanks,
    Doug

I also think it was never all that effective. In this country how many cars maintained a high enough speed to really get much air through there? I think the guys in Maranello just came to grips with reality.

Mine is just sitting there as I have to weld in back in (note, the coolant pipe is not in the right place).

No ring on my car, thanks.

Maybe that is why my CV cooling hose was just dangling there near the inner A arm bushing.

I did decide to make a heat shield to put over the exhaust pipe where my cats used to be, so the CV boot doesn't get direct radiant heat.

Funny enough, the original boots (at least since 1983 when I bought the car) were OK until I jacked up the car to get the rear shocks out a couple weeks ago and the right inner split wide open and separated from the drive flange.

Brian, IIRC it was this topic and a similar discussion where FerrariFixer lost his cool big time. IIRC he said his Ferrari trainers told him the hose was to cool the differential & referred to an FPC description.

At the time I looked up the description in the '78 FPC and the description(See 1st image) translates to:
However, the description changed a few years later(see 2nd image), the Italian translation is:
Obviously the '82 FPC Italian text is confused as Sx. is short for sinstra (left hand), so go figure... I'm inclined to trust the '78 description.

However, all this is moot, whatever air manages to get thru the tube cools the general area of BOTH the boots & differential.

When the 328 was introduced, the QV & 328 dextra (left) side air intake tube was changed eliminating the flexible tube.
