Does anyone know an off the shelf parts store resistor that will fit nicely under the coils so I can pick one up locally and not wait on UPS to run? I burned a set of points up in 50 miles. Checking the resistors with an ohm meter on the bench they behaved ok, but last night I checked while running and one coil is receiving 9 volts and the other is up to 12.5-13.

    Thanks,
    Bill

I replaced coils with Bosch blue coils with internal resisters. They work and were pretty cheap from a west coast VW parts house. I tried to find a correct value balast resistor but could not find one. I understand that the Bosch coils made in Brazil are better than the Mexaco units.

Good plan, but I just had bought 2 new coils. Drat. I did find a generic 1.8 ohm unit at NAPA and mounted it to the existing screw holes under the coil. Haven't had time to work on it but tonight I should know if I fixed my high voltage issue.

the generic ballast resistor should work just fine.
