Get Well Felipe
Thanks Florian - that's what's needed on here, not doom and gloom in the event Felipe is on FChat. Carol
Massa remains in stable condition Felipe Massas condition was described as stable on Sunday morning, with Ferrari confirming that there were no complications overnight following the Brazilians successful surgery for a skull fracture at Budapests AEK Hospital. Massa sustained the fracture and concussion during his high-speed crash at the Hungaroring in Saturdays qualifying session, in which he was struck on the head by a spring from the Brawn car of Rubens Barrichello. After surgery he was put into an induced coma, a standard procedure following such an operation, and remained under observation in intensive care overnight. "After undergoing an operation yesterday afternoon, Felipe Massa's condition remains stable and there were no further complications through the night, said a Ferrari statement. "He will be given another CT scan today, which will provide more precise information."
Get well soon Felipe and Best Wishes for your rapid recovery. Im really glad your car and your Hans Device did their job to protect you in the following crash. such a freak accident you couldent even see Rubens car in the distance? I wonder if Shumi will get a drive for the rest of the season, I bet Ferrari will think about it?
Felipe should ultimately do well, but the basilar skull fracture puts the serverity of this accident in a totally different category. At first I thought he might just have a laceration, depressed frontal bone/superior orbital roof fracture, and possibly a frontal sinus fracture with TBI based on the photo. This IS usually a fairfly quick recovery. If you watch the slo-mo of the impact, his head recoils back severly with the impact. It will be interesting to see if they feel that this initial impact was the cause of the basilar skull fracture, or if it was the impact with the tire wall (despite the HANS device). This is what happened to Dale Earnhart. Point is, unfortunately, I really doubt he will be back driving an F1 car this season (G-loads, reactions times, etc.) Be well Felipe!!!
BBC's latest contains this phrase: "During the course of his examination they established that he suffered a serious, life-threatening injuries including loss of consciousness and a fracture of the forehead on the left side and a fracture on the base of the skull" could be that is leading to the basal skull fracture suggestions. He went front in to a tire wall at 120, it would be an "expected" consequence.
If He does have a base fracture, I doubt weather he will be back in the car again this season. It brings into question if his Hans Device was correctly adjusted?
Wow. from the pics I assumed the fx was frontal bone / orbit... A basilar skull fx put this in an entirely different category of head trauma. Best to Felipe. Time will tell...
I hope he continues to recover quickly. When this happened, I couldn't help but sense it was worse than we were told. As soon as they announced he was "awake, in good spirits and waving to the crowd" we saw the air ambulance taking Felipe away. A later report that announced he was "dazed but will be just fine" was shortly followed by news that he was in surgery. And then this morning the description is of life-threatening injuries that were attended-to. Not to sound negative, but it's reminiscent of the Ronnie Peterson saga. In the rush to be the first to update fans with the latest it needs to be remembered that accuracy is important. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery Felipe!
I am not a massa fan, but this deeply saddens me and I really hope the best for him and a speedy recovery. Hopefully he is still able to race after he has recovered.
I think thats old news mate. He was awaken by the docs, to check on him as well as to talk to his family. Latest i heard from Yahoo, he'll be in induced coma till Tuesday.
Best wishes to Felipe and loved ones for a quick and full recovery. My condolences to the Surtees family as well. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Watching the qualifying yesterday, not knowing the extent of his injuries was horrendous - and I feared the worst when they took so long to get him out the car, and had a sheet shielding the car. Then everything seemed fine with him talking and waving to the crowd. Now it seems things are more serious ... I am a big FM fan and was so sad for him in Brazil '08 , and then met him in March '09. What a humble and professional guy! I hope he is on the road to a speedy recovery, and that his family is strong through this time. Hopefully he will be back in a car again - although I dont think he should rush anything - this season is a write off for him anyway. Hope he regains his nerve - this shows just what these guys are made of.... Get well soon Felipe.
