I have searched but have not found: the name of the company (not Matson) that ships cars to HI in a container. The stock of 328s here in the islands is very small. And at this time there is only one for sale that I know about. It's not a good car and I have no interest in someone's problem. The mainland is a different story, with several nice examples available on F Chat classifieds. I have had several cars shipped here before by Matson, but they often go as deck cargo. Not a good choice for a fine 328. Thanks, Dennis.

I sold a 288 replica to a Dr a few years back in Hi and we used Matson to ship out of Oakland, the car did go in a container. I belive it was about $800

I read the posted link and this may be a deal breaker for any sports car

    Required Ground Clearance.
All vehicles must have six inches of ground clearance in order to be shipped.

I think that I am correct. There are only two ocean shipping companies that offer US mainland to Hawaii service: Matson and Horizon. I don't think that any car that goes Matson is "deck cargo". The vehicle carriers are "RoRo" and the cars are not exposed to the weather. Matson are not fools. They do care for all cars and they do protect the high value cars. I have had customers tell me that their cars were actually in containers when they arrived because Matson was protecting themselves from any unpleasant consequences. I have never gone in the West bound direction, but I have flown a couple of cars to the mainland via Pacific Air Cargo and the prices were not as bad as one might think.

The 328 that is for sale here is not a "bad" car. In fact, it has a lot of good going for it. It is very clean and well cared for. It is just a Euro car. It makes no difference for a car that is to live out its days in Hawaii, but, of course, it makes a real difference in its value in the mainland market.

Yes, I misspoke. The Honolulu 328 GTS is a nice car, but probably not the car for me. I would prefer a GTB.
Re Matson; I have shipped six cars from the Port of Seattle to Hawaii with Matson. Every one arrived without any damage at all. I don't know if they were put in containers, but they were in fine shape when they arrived on Kauai. The biggest nuisance is getting them to the pier with just a tiny bit of gas in the tank.
All interisland shipping is handled by Young Brothers. That transit is typically "on the deck" of a barge, but it only takes a few hours and is not a big issue. There is no more Superferry. It had a short and unhappy life here in the Islands.
